Mangaluru, Mar 5: Welcoming guests with flower bouquets is a common protocol followed in many programmes. Setting a new trend is Mangaluru North MLA Dr Bharath Y Shetty, who is asking organisers to replace his flower bouquets and garlands with notebooks.

On the occasion of the Kulai Jetty foundation stone laying ceremony, Shetty was seen receiving a bundle of books while being welcomed by the organisers at the formal programme held at Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Hall in New Mangalore Port, Panambur.

When Daijiworld questioned him about the unique practice, Shetty said he has directed his PA to convey message to the organisers of the programmes to gift him books instead of flowers.

“I am invited to different programmes and mostly people welcome me with flowers and mementoes. However, these flowers go waste and so is the money that is spent on them. However, books can be used by needy students,” the MLA points out.

Doing the math, the MLA says he sometimes attends up to 10 programmes. “In each programme if I receive 3 books it will be 30 at the end of the day and 900 a month. These I can give to deserving students and hence help them in their education, which will ultimately benefit the society,” he says.

The NMPT programme is the beginning of his unique campaign and the MLA is elated that he received 5 books. “There is a huge demand for books. I shall identify needy students, government schools and divide books accordingly,” he says.

Education and Honesty, two good virtues which a politician should have. Even though I am not supporter of BJP, I appreciate the gesture by Bharath Shetty.

Good thought. Hope many politicians take such initiative to help poor students. Our politicans are not in following good initiatives of others, but in corruption they will outsmart the others.

I welcome this gesture of MLA Bharath Shetty for the cause of society and for the betterment of our nation.
It is time for all political parties to shun the idea of displaying 'Sword' or releasing 'pigeons' or accepting the flower garlands.
I would rather instead of three books, three trees of fruit-bearing will make the difference to our environment and support life.
At the same time don't use these books in the BJP's facilitation programmes which received as a donation from the common people.
Moreover, Bharath Shetty is Doctor by profession should dedicated a few hours in serving rural camps or volunteer teaching school kids where there is a shortage.

We must appreciate Dr. Bharath Shetty's concern over needy students. They wont forget this help till their last breath . Very good initiative. Without a paise from government fund helping needy....!One must observe his working style, its possible with qualified people only.
Unlike Max 10th civil engineer cum Dollor=Rupee economist, this doctor is doing something good without trackless train. My best wishes to Dr. Bharath.

He has clearly stated " These I can give to deserving students and hence help them in their education, which will ultimately benefit the society,” he says."

Your case is that of lack of comprehension. Books won't help you, we have to build a school for that and make sure you attend.

Guys are you commenting just for the sake of it ??. Any new and novel idea should be encouraged. Negativity all the time is not good.
