New Delhi, Jul 9: State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a satellite phone in India to provide connectivity in areas without mobile network coverage. Priced at Rs 1,34,166, including taxes, the device is designed to operate through satellite networks rather than conventional cellular towers.
The satellite phone is intended for use in remote and off-grid locations where standard mobile connectivity is unavailable. However, BSNL clarified that the device cannot be purchased or used without prior authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as satellite phones are strictly regulated in India.
Unlike conventional mobile phones, the handset connects directly to satellites, enabling users to make voice calls even in areas without cellular infrastructure. The company said the device is particularly useful during emergencies and in regions where telecom networks are inaccessible.

BSNL said the satellite phone has been developed in partnership with global satellite communication providers, including Inmarsat, to offer reliable connectivity across remote locations.
The key features of the satellite phone include satellite-based connectivity beyond the reach of mobile towers, voice calling capability in remote areas, SOS emergency support, long battery life for extended operations and a rugged design suitable for harsh environments.
The telecom operator said the device has been developed primarily for mission-critical applications rather than everyday use. It is expected to benefit personnel in defence, maritime operations, disaster management, mining, remote industrial projects, as well as pilgrims and adventure travellers operating in isolated regions.
BSNL reiterated that individuals and organisations must obtain prior approval from the Department of Telecommunications before purchasing or using the handset. It warned that possessing or operating a satellite phone without the required authorisation could attract legal action under Indian regulations.
The company said interested customers can visit their nearest BSNL office or contact its customer support helpline for further information.
The launch comes as BSNL continues expanding its terrestrial mobile network across the country. The company recently announced that it has commissioned nearly 99,000 4G sites as part of its nationwide rollout, with the government also considering approval for the deployment of additional 4G infrastructure.
