Will holidays and weekend affect voter turnout in Karnataka?

Bengaluru, Mar 11: Karnataka will have Lok Sabha elections in two phases on April 18 and 23. However, with the poll schedule clashing with the weekend and government holidays, there is a concern if the voter turnout will be affected.

April 17 is Mahavir Jayanti, April 19 is Good Friday followed by the Easter weekend on April 20 and 21. Also, school exams are likely to be completed by April 18 which could result in many working parents opting for vacations, taking advantage of the continuous holidays.

BJP leader S Suresh Kumar raised concern that the holidays will affect voter turn-out. “Bengaluru has been facing low voter turnout and the holiday situation may not help in bettering it,” he says.

Kumar said that as Karnataka is notorious for low voter turn-out, the party has requested central leadership and Election Commission to consider rescheduling the elections in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, different party workers are instructing voters to not go for vacations and do their duty towards the country first.

In Tamil Nadu election will be held in a single phase on April 18. DMK spokesperson A Sarvanan believes that this may not affect the voter turnout as people are aware of their civic duty. Also, with summer vacations beginning at the end of April, people may not go for vacations prior that.

Kerala political parties are taking the long holiday in a positive light and are confident it will improve the voter turnout.

The polling will be held in Kerala in single phase on April 23. CPI(M) leader M B Rajesh feels the long holidays before the polling day, will help people residing outside Kerala return to their hometown to vote.

Most observers agree that the poll schedule announced on Sunday by Election Commission of India appeared tailor-made for BJP’s virtually solitary crowd puller and vote catcher to barnstorm the key states.
By April 23rd, all of the South, North East, Maharashtra, and Gujarat would finish voting. After April 23rd, it's only North India that will have polling till May 19. This is also the period that will coincide with the holy month of Ramazan. Did the Election Commission factor it? And will it ensure a lower turnout of the minority community at booths?
None of the previous Prime Ministers were 24x7 on poll mode, unlike Mr. Modi. None of them visited 37 cities in 40 days before the poll announcement and announced or inaugurated 157 projects. And that is why it seems the poll schedule announced on Sunday is tailor-made for him to campaign as extensively as he did in 2014.
BJP even after five years in power is heavily dependent on Narendra Modi’s ability to sway the electorate. And the gaps in the polling schedule in key states, it appears at first glance, are designed to enable Narendra Modi to address 150-200 more rallies across the country in the next two months.

    1. Why is polling for 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu being conducted in one phase but for 28 seats in Karnataka in two phases?
    2. In 2014, Odisha too had polled in a single phase. How much violence was reported from the state than to make EC go for four-phase polling this time? Why Odisha in 4 phases in 2019, when Andhra Pradesh/Telangana in 1 Phase?
Election Commission’s poll schedule raises eyebrows, likely to help a Modi blitzkrieg. It seems well-understood match-fixing to bring back PM Modi government to power with the blessing of Election Commission of India.

One who is aware of his / her civic duty will not enjoy vacation at the expense of election .. others will not vote even if it's scheduled for any convenient date ... so just go-ahead as per schedule ...
