Mangalore, Feb 28:
The extended roofs on shops in central market, which were constructed without permission, were removed by the city corporation on Friday February 27.

The illegal extensions were bulldozed around the central market building. There were about 20 such shops and the reason for the removal was because they encroached on the footpath.

Some of the vendors requested that the demolition be postponed and said that they would remove it if given time. But city  corporation commissioner Sameer Shukla   who was leading the  drive  said that offenders had been orally informed two days in advance.

This eviction drive followed a visit by deputy commissioner (DC) V Ponnuraj who had ordered that the footpaths be cleared.

Shukla said that though there was no requirement for them to issue notices to shops which had illegal constructions, they had been informed in advance orally.

Some of the vendors argued with the commissioner that the extra roofs had been put up with oral approval from the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC). To this Shukla replied that there was provision only for putting up temporary shades to give protection from the elements, but not for permanent structures.

The MCC staff also made use of the opportunity to remove illegal petty shops in footpath which came as a surprise move for many of the squatters. A large crowd gathered to see the drive and there was a significant police presence too.

It is nice work from  MCC  but there are footpath shops in the whole of Mangalore city which need to be removed as well. That will keep our city clean and green

Why he cannot make Car street road broader? Before you comment please do not blame these poor vendors. They are back bone of their families, they do hard work. I would appreciate the MCC if they take such actions across the board against all violators. It appears that MCC and Shukla have the appetite only to go after the smaller poor vendors and goodangdi’s who are struggling to make a living.

Authorities were silent for decades. They allowed to grow illegal practices. This is not the best solution in a democratic country.Shop owners should have been given enough time to act....

I dont care what others think. Our good man only has a one directional mind which only knows to act without any thought of consequences. In Udupi Feb temperatures are perhaps 5-6 deg. higher than normal. the pedestrian has no shade because both ancient trees and "illegal" extensions have been "bull dozed" except those of a few very powerful shop owners near the most dangerous road bend in the whole of Udupi !

Those who are praising here the action of MCC can not understand the pain of a common man like me who lost 2 "goodangdi" (portable shop). I am strugling hard under the scorching sun , dust and carbondioxide polluted air to make both ends meet. For you people it is very easy to comment inside your AC rooms in gulf countries where you get free internet access and free tea cofee with handsome salary at the end of the month. To know what is a real pain, you must be born like me. If you were in my position you would have cursed the administration. One question I want to ask all these royal people who commented positively here. Can you set up a fund and help me to build my life again???

Well done commissioner and MCC, but please make sure you continue your good work with regular inspection by your staff and your continued supervision and follow up.Otherwise in a few days time what you demolished and cleared will re-appear. Foot paths all over Hampankatta are occupied by the illegal hawkers and we are forced to walk on the middle of the road risking our lives specially ladies and children. Good luck (you need it).

Nobody is trying to take away bread from poor people. If Abu Dhabi or any other developed nation had allowed these people to migrate over there then they would have also lived a better life over there. Why not these people be true hawakers and sell their goods by visiting home to home which is a far better way of doing it instead of creating inconvenience to pedestrians and the cause for accidents. These street hawkers have to find out a more organized way of doing their business like Mumbai Dubbawalas.

MCC had done a good job without notice. It will stop the practice of encroachment habits in future. We know DC. Ponnuraj & his nice work at UDUPI. Mr. Sameer Shukla has taken a courageous step and please continue the drive to clear other parts of the city. Giving a notice to vacant illigal works is nothing but supporting illigal works. Police never issue a notice prior to arrest a .....!?. Thanks to Daijiworld for publishing such a good news.

Demolition today is the other face of criminal negligence and indifference of the past. First, the authorities allow illegal structures to come up and thrive, then they provide electricity, water and ration cards (identity proofs) and one fine day when the city looks like a face with small pox, the courts wake up and pass the Orders.

The vendors should be provided a place for rehabilitation and start a market place which can be convenient for the general public. The shops were not just existed for decoration of the city they were meeting the demands of the people and were a convenience for the society.

Demolition of illegal property is good job by the govt, but meantime they have to consider, and arrange substitue for the shop vendors, who are depending these small shops with small income and there is no other way to earn their daily bread…

Mangalore is one of the fast growing cities in South Canara. These things should have been done long back but never too late. Looks painful but a good move. I feel a prior written notice is must before bulldozing. Thanks to Mangalore City Corporation.

An excellent step by Corporation commissioner to clear the encroachment and now drivers and pedestrians can move smoothly. The real problem in Hampakatta market area is that shopkeepers are occupying the footbath and pedestrian's forced to walk on the street, naturally traffic congestion will take place. The administrator like Mr. Sameer Shukla has  taken a courageous step  and please continue the drive to clear other parts of the city.
