Mulayam, Akhilesh, Jaya Bachchan SP star campaigners


Lucknow, Mar 24 (IANS): The Samajwadi Party on Sunday announced 40 top leaders, including party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, President Akhilesh Yadav and actor-MP Jaya Bachchan, will be the party's star campaigners for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

According to Samajwadi Party leaders, Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav, his uncle Ram Gopal Yadav, cousin Tej Pratap Yadav, senior leader and former state minister Azam Khan and party's Secretary Rajendra Choudhary will also be among the star campaigners.

Earlier in the day, the party has announced that Akhilesh Yadav will contest from Azamgarh parliamentary constituency and Azam Khan from Rampur.

The Samajwadi Party, which won five seats in 2014 general elections, is contesting the elections this year in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

It is contesting on 37 seats, while the Mayawati-led BSP is contesting on 38 seats and the RLD on three seats. The SP-BS-RLD has left two seats for Congress in the state.

The BJP-led NDA had won 73 out 80 seats in the state in the 2014 polls.

The seven-phased elections are scheduled from April 11 to May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.
