Mangalore Airport Revenues On the Upswing

Mangalore Airport Revenues On the Upswing

DHNS

Mangalore, Mar 8: Revenues and passenger numbers at the Mangalore airport have not only been steady, but also set for an upswing.

The airport is expected to garner a profit of Rs 8 crore in 2008-’09, only marginally less than the Rs 9-crore profit it had made in 2007-08.

“We are extremely satisfied with the profits, given the sluggish traffic and slowdown of the economy. The new integrated terminal building will be ready by May, and help improve the traffic even more,” M R Vasudeva, Airport Director, Mangalore Airport.

One more international plane - the Dammam, to Saudi Arabia - will fly out from Mangalore from March 25.

The flight, which was introduced following public demand, will operate twice a week. “This will also bring in more passengers,” said Vasudeva.

Things have changed

Till 2005, Mangalore airport had made operating losses of up to Rs 2.5 crore per annum. But in 2006, after the introduction of international flights to Dubai, things have changed for the better.

Operating profits touched Rs 9 crore in 2008.

“Prior to 2005, we had handled only 3,500 aircraft movements per annum. But in 2008, we handled 12,000. Air passenger numbers have also gone up from 2.77 lakh to 7.05 lakh in the period,” Vasudeva stated.

Now, the officials want to step on the accelerator - A sum of Rs 147 crore is being spent for airport upgradation.

Two aero-bridges and seven escalators will also be in place from May.

“Once the access road from the city to the airport is built by the government, there will be no looking back,” said Vasudeva.

Even Mangalore Airport can yield more income by operating flights from Riyadh/ Jeddah – Mangalore or either Jeddah/ Riyadh – Dammam- Mangalore, so all the people from undivided South Kanara, Kasaragod & North Kanara residing in Saudi Arabia can avail the benefit of this connection. We hope that Air India will look into this matter very earnestly.

South Kanara population need not go to Dubai or Singapore, if Coastal Karnataka is a FREE PORT like Dubai and Singapore. Our districts have seen able leaders like T A pai, Mallya Sr., J. Poojary, George Fernandes, Oscar Fernandes, Mable Rebello, Madwaraj(s) of Malpe, Dhananjaya Kumar and so on at the center. In 1970's TA Pai, George Fernandes, Madhu Dandavathe of Ratnagiri led fight for Konkan railway and after 20 years we saw the results.

It is time to campaign for a free port status for coastal Karnataka districts. We can have Dubai or Singapoor here. Let us get started right away...Results will benefit the up coming generations.

Really hard working and honest officer. If India get some more officer like him, then definately India will shine. One more point to be taken into consideration, I have noticed that some of custom officer are trying to harras the passenger for bribe (Luncha). Please take this issue seriously in order to maintain good service and harras free journey

The aero-bridges and escalators will not be in place in May, thats sure. Given the election comming up excuses are plenty, there is no harm in giving a date for May it can be handled. About the rise in passenger traffic, its bound to increase with gulf direct flights its anybodys say. But the point is how was were the passengers treated, pathetically. It gave a feeling that the AAI did not do any howework before introducing the flights. Remember the complaints filed in the letter to AI CEO. Work is being done but at a very slow pace and in turn the passengers feel the pinch. Making a negative profit highlights that some still prefer the Gulf-MUM-IXE route. If things are to inprove then set milestones are to be met. Lets hope that this year after May when we go to Mang. we get the facilities mentioned.
