Udupi, Apr 3: Udupi deputy commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati has warned private TV channels against conducting opinion polls with direct questions regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

"Media asking people direct questions such as 'who will you vote for' is a clear violation of electoral code of conduct. This will influence voters," she said.

The DC, who was chairing the Lok Sabha election media certification and supervisory committee (MCMC) on Wednesday April 3, warned that cases would be filed against the TV channels and the public which are conducting and participating in such polls.

"It is a matter of concern when voters openly speak on the political party/candidate they will choose. It is broadcast live on some channels. Every candidate is given an equal opportunity for open and fair elections," the DC said, adding that public interviews should just remain as public discussions and not aim to influence the public.

The DC warned against printing the names of DC and zilla panchayat CEO on invites of private programmes, without obtaining their permission. Action will be taken against such organisers, she said.

The DC, who reviewed the MCMC's work activities, suggested the officers should be extra vigilant tracking online media and social networking sites.

The meeting was attended by zilla panchayat chief executive officer Sindhu B Rupesh, MCMC nodal officer Srinivasa Rao, district information officer Khader Shah, MCMC member Varadesh Hiregange and Mangaluru Akashvani programme director Ushalatha Sarapady.
