EC notice to Sadhvi Pragya over her remarks on Karkare

Bhopal, Apr 20 (IANS): The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday issued a notice to BJP nominee from Bhopal parliamentary seat Sadhvi Pragya Thakur over her remarks on police officer Hemant Karkare, who was killed in the 26/11 terror attack.

Noting that Thakur's remarks violate the Model Code of Conduct, District Election Officer Sudaam Khade served the notice on her and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district chief Vikas Virani and gave them a day's time to file a reply.

The officer also warned of unilateral action in case of non-submission of the reply within the stipulated time.

Thakur had claimed that Karkare died during the attacks as she "cursed" him for torturing her. "I had told him you will be finished, and he was killed by terrorists in less than two months," she had said.

But on Friday she apologised for her remarks and took back her statement.

On the same day, Chief Electoral Officer V.L. Kantharao took cognisance of Thakur's remarks.

    The PM justifies fielding this Sadhvi Pragya as the candidate from U.P. Modi has absolutely nothing to show by way of performance during the five years he has been in office. Other than blaming the Congress for what he calls 'doing nothing' during the 70 years, this time in his speeches there is no mention of what he has done, there is no mention of Ache Din, there is no mention of vikas and development and there is no mention of the promises he made prior to the elections in 2014. Several businessmen I come across are lamenting their decision to support Modi five years back. We all know how the ill advised demonisation broke the back of the economy and everyone is convinced that this has not done away with black money in any way. Black money is back with a vengeance. The high level of GST is driving away the customers from buying non essential goods as a result of which the economy is suffering. Little wonder, therefore, that Modi is now using his trump card, Hinduvta to garner votes. People like Sadhvi are fully aware that Modi is firmly behind them and don't be surprised if you will get to hear more hate speeches in the days to come.
