New Delhi, Apr 21: Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman has been recommended for the Vir Chakra medal for shooting down F-16 aircraft of the Pakistani Air Force, in a dogfight on February 27.
After Param Vir Chakra and Mahavir Chakra, the Vir Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in the armed forces during times of war. Indian Air Force in the past had given Vir Chakra medals to all the pilots who shot down enemy fighters. In turn, the pilots who conducted the bombing in pre-dawn strike on JEM facility in Balakot on February 26 have been recommended for Vayu Sena medals.
Meanwhile, Abhinandan was transferred out of Srinagar to another base in the western front till he is found medically fit to fly again. As per sources, his tenure with the IAF's number 51 squadron was getting over and it was a routine transfer. His new base reportedly is also a fighter base. Once he is cleared by the Bengaluru based Institute Of Aerospace Medicine he would be able to continue his flying duties.
