Dharwad: 'Indecent' dressing by girls is reason for rape, says Basavaprakash Swamiji

Dharwad, May 2: In a controversial statement, Basavaprakash Swamiji of Akkamahadevi Anubhava Peeta has said that rapes are happening because of the 'indecent' dresses worn by girls, due to which, he said, minds get 'corrupted'.

Swamiji was speaking at a press conference in the city.

"Girls should not wear indecent dresses. If girls dress in an indecent manner, minds get corrupted and rapes take place. In addition, girls need to follow our culture. I affirm the statement of Mate Mahadevi that was given earlier," Swamiji added.

"Women should not venture out after midnight. It will bring threat to their life. I am saying that the society will be virtuous, if women cover their body completely and live by rules of Indian tradition," he said.

Swamiji expressed regret on the rape and murder of girl student at Raichur that took place recently. He said that the culprits of that heinous crime should be hanged in public.

He also warned the government that if no action is taken, he will conduct a fast near Suvarna Soudha of Belagavi.

This coming from Swamiji is principle is not right. Swamiji, has given up everything and embraced religion.
If he was talking from the societal front, then also it is not OK. It basically goes on to show that men can't keep their handle bar under control. That is again not OK as it is tantamount to say that man is also an animal. If so, he be treated so.
On the other hand, if he is a proponent of Mathradevobava and hence is saying so, then also, it is not OK. This philosophy is universal and needs to be adhered not just by Swamiji, but by one and all in a society.
In a society such as ours, wherein present-ability is more valued than intellect, we must embrace this change (whether good or bad). Although we derived this from the western culture, the meaning of being well dressed or being presentable is synonymous with being polite and respectful to others and it is part of etiquette.
In a conservative society such as ours, need of the hour is maturity and not hallow education which neither the preacher knows or anyone who adheres to such preaching.

In my opinion, rape is such a big crime, not because of the physical abuse by the rapist; but it is because of abusing /disregarding the modesty and honour of the pious woman.
On the similar note, it is also a point that how much a woman considers as the limit of short and revealing dress that defines the limit of her modesty.
This holds good for men also when they wear short dress.

Let us study the case with the classic example of USA, where girls wear dresses which is normally short and revealing and considered as indecent by any normal Indian Citizen.

Just see the statistics of rapes in the USA. There are 1,36,000 reported rape cases (total population is about 33 crores; adult population is still less ) in a single year- 2017. There are surely many rape incidents that are not reported.
This figure is so high even after the consensual sex is very very much common and also that 4.5% of Americans belong to LGBTQ community.
So those who don’t correlate decency in dressing with the number of rape cases in the USA, I request their answer for what could be the reason for such a high rape incidents. And those who say that it is the dirty/aggressive/ crazy mind that provokes and not the dress, please answer me -Why do you feel that only American males are provoked far more than the males in any other countries?

With all due respect to Swamiji, we cant accept this at once. This increasing rapes and rude behaviours among new generation, I believe is predominantly due to the culture they have been brought up. Regardless of their literacy (education) the morality and ethics in which they have been developed, becomes the major factor on how they behave in certain scenario and how they react to their own and others emotions.

However I cant deny completely the insight of what Swamiji says. Despite we, Indians believe and follow different religions, we also follow a great culture respecting all religions, tradition & people where woman is exclusively treated with highest respect. Even we call India attributing to woman “Bharat Maatha” which I believe makes more sensible for those who love and respect our great nation.

When woman is traditionally respected with this high value, she is also expected to show off herself respected and behave in that capacity. Way how we dress up, interact and behave is also part of respecting the culture and values of our society. In line with this, the way woman dresses-up is also attached to the moral values she has been cultivated. Finally it goes again the other way around and ends up at how the society changed or reduced its moral values.

By the way when we talk about RIGHTS and JUSTIES from the angle of LAW and EDUCATION……sorry, we may have to put my above paragraph in to dustbin…..

Moreover, most of the rapes that have happened are done with women who wear proper dress and did not provoke the rapists in anyway!!! First thing, I don't know, where you get these type of date from.

Note one more point here that the girl might have been wearing decent dress while she was raped but she might have worn very revealing dress lately, that might have corrupted the mind of the potential rapist. The Swamiji did not say that the girl gets raped the day the girl wears indecent clothes. Of course, i believe, Swamiji meant very indecent clothes in his speech.

I don't understand that i should laugh or cry to your comment and for the number of agrees you have gained.

In one instance you are claiming that decency in dress is irrelevant in the cases of rape and rapists are committing the rape even if the girls are wearing full dress. But immediately, in next instance you are saying that Pornography is the main reason for the increase rape cases. Are you not contradicting your own statement made in the first instance?

Feels terrible seeing fingers are pointed towards ladies who are harassed and troubled for what they wear....people who have issues with other peoples clothing....please close your eyes or look somewhere else. Rapists are not men....they are scum that feed off the good in and around us, condemn them not the ladies.......no wonder why our country is still falling back .
