New Delhi, May 2: In a relief to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the Election Commission on Thursday May 2 gave him a clean chit on his remark against BJP president Amit Shah.

In an election rally last month, the Congress president had called Amit Shah a murder-accused, and the BJP had approached the EC with a complaint. The EC however ruled that there was no violation of poll code on Rahul Gandhi's part.

"Murder-accused BJP President Amit Shah....waah! kya shaan hai (Wow, how grand)... Have you heard Jay Shah's name? He is a magician, he made Rs 50,000 into Rs 80 crore in 3 months," Gandhi had said at an election rally at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

The EC in its ruling said that it is "of the considered view that in this matter no such violation of MCC (model code of conduct) is made out".

Amit Shah was named accused in the alleged fake encounter case of gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh, which took place in 2005. In 2014, a court had said that there was not enough evidence against Amit Shah to hold a trial.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court ordered the EC to take decisions on the pending poll code violation complaints against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah by May 6.
