Udupi, May 3: A medical practitioner from near Brahmavar was cheated by his Facebook friend who introduced herself as a lady doctor practicing in London. The doctor has filed a complaint in this regard in cyber crime, economic offences and narcotics (CEN) police station here.
Dr Praveen Kumar (43) from Brahmavar Handadi in the district was befriended on Facebook by a person who claimed herself as Dr Camilla Gampi from London by sending him a friend request. After sometime since Dr Praveen accepted her friend request, the lady called him over phone on April 30 to inform him that she was stuck at the Delhi airport because of objections raised by customs officials. She claimed that she was in need of two lac rupees urgently to pay customs duty, duly clarifying that she has pound sterling currency in her possession, duly adding that the customs officers had refused accept that currency.
Believing that his friend is in trouble and is in need of Indian currency urgently, Dr Praveen transferred Rs 50,000 by way of Syndicate Bank's mobile app and balance Rs 1, 45,700 by RTGS. Thereafter his 'friend' was found to have switched off her cell phone.
Frustrated by this development, Dr Praveen Kumar has approached the police. The police have taken up investigation.
