Haveri, May 8: A minor girl who was attending wedding engagement ceremony in a house at Khursapur in Shiggaon taluk of the district was raped by a man, who also murdered her by smothering her, and dumped her body in a toilet. The girl in question was seven-year-old, and the incident happened late night on Monday.

The person who was behind this dastardly act happens to be Shetteppa Basappa Vaddar (22) from Kurdikeri village, Hubballi taluk. The girl, who was from Ingalagi village in Kundagol taluk in Dharwad district, had come to the function with her parents. Even as the other guests were busy celebrating, the minor girl was raped.

The youngster had slept in the same room in which the girl and her family were asleep. When everyone was busy with engagement-related work, the boy succeeded in talking the girl into accompanying him behind the house where he raped her. When the girl resisted and began to shout aloud, he smothered her to death. He then developed cold feet, and threw the body into a toilet before walking away.

After the conclusion of the engagement ceremony and community feast, the parents went back to the room and were dismayed to find that their daughter was not to be found. Everyone began to search for her. Some also expressed suspicion about Vaddar, as he had slept in the same room. During the search, the girl's body was found from the toilet.

On the basis of complaint made by the parents, the police arrested Shettappa, who was found moving about in the house, and acting like not knowing anything about the incident. During the police questioning, however, he confessed to the crime.
