Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, May 11: On account of liquor addiction of the husband which had ruined peace in the family in the past, and had given rise to frequent quarrels between the two, the wife who got frustrated, committed suicide on Friday May 10. Overwhelmed by this incident, the man too tried to end his own life.

Sumathi (40), wife of Varadaraj, an auto rickshaw driver from Edthoorpadavu in Iruvathur village, Bantwal taluk, hanged herself. It is said that she was fed up with the frequent fights with her husband on his drinking habit. Varadaraj thereafter consumed rat poison. He stands admitted into a private hospital at Mangaluru for treatment.

Varadaraj used to get heavily drunk often in the past. It is said that he had succeeded in keeping away from liquor since the last couple of years. On Friday afternoon, however, he came home drunk, which enraged his wife. The couple fought on this issue, at the end of which Sumathi went into the bathroom and ended her life. Varadaraj, who was dismayed by this sudden development, went to a nearby hillock and consumed rat poison. He was thereafter admitted into a hospital at Mangaluru.

The couple has a five-year-old girl child. A case about the incident was registered in Punjalkatte police station.

I partly blame the woman for her own death. Her husband had given up drinks since a couple of years and this time he came drunk which annoyed her. There was no point in committing suicide for a silly reason. She should have thought of her five year old daughter who will now live without mother's love.

Sad and tragic news to loose the life for this silly cause which should have been reconciled amicably.

We should not sit in judgement. Instead, pray for both, and pray that couples live amicably and that. if they can't do so, take civilized measures such as divorce. It is truism that friction often arises and couples become worst enemies of each other.

    Another sad case.

The woman must have been in her 20s when she got married.

If she had waited until she turned 40 to marry, she could have found a non-drunkard rickshaw driver. Or someone in even a better-earning profession.

So my advice to unmarried women...(if they are willing to listen)...

Wait until you turn 40 before deciding to marry. There is a high chance a non-alcoholic person in his 40s will remain so for the rest of his life.

You and your 40...😡and your dumb advice... Keep it aside... 👏 For drinking is there any age bar? For quarrels is there any age bar?.. Pottu logic.. Let your girlfriend wait and you wait life long.. Do you think girls parents wait for their daughter till she turns 40 ? When she turns 40 what will be the age of her parents? Very sad

Mangalorean Mangalore, you really mean it so?Tell me is there anyone who doesnt drink in mangalore,?And you?what will one marry after 40?Better be alone than to marry after 40,or to spoil some ones life marrying and drinking.Best is when one comes home drunk,be quiet, dont argue. All arguements and suggestions can be saved when one is dry.If he understand or not is another matter.Sad ,both didnt think of their child.Specially mother should have left him and ogne elsewhere with child because of his drinking daily.Atleast child would have today not a opfer a orphan..Hope if he survives understand what he has done with his drinking.
