Mangaluru, May 11: As water level at Thumbe dam has been coming down rapidly, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is seriously thinking of rationing the water supply even further.

This will be as against the current system of supplying water for four days and restricting it for two days thereafter. As per the new system, the period of suspension of supply would be extended to three days from the current two.

The water level at Thumbe, which stood at 4.24 metres on Thursday May 9, came down to 4.13 metres on Friday May 10. The drastic reduction in water level and absence of rainfall have been a cause of worry for the officials. The officials are aware that extending the period of suspension of water supply will aggravate the water situation in the city.

Even though pumping of water after two days of rationing began at Thumbe on May 9, water had not reached several areas even till Friday evening, some locals claimed.

It is said that the supply was hit after power supply snapped at 3 am last Sunday. The areas where the water did not reach are Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Bolar, Kodikal, Urwa Store, Nanthoor, Bikarnakatte, Shaktinagar, Bunder, among others. As many complaints were received from these areas, water was supplied through water tankers.
