Mangaluru, May 16: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor is one of the premier institutions of the city, a hub for creativity and innovative ideas in Engineering, which was established in the year 2002, with an aim to educate youth in Engineering and Technology. SJEC is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi and is recognized by All India Council Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
SJEC is a Christian minority college but is open to students of all communities without distinction of religion or caste. It is professionally managed and forms a part of over 250 educational institutions of the diocese of Mangaluru.

The principal of SJEC Dr Rio D’Souza says, "St Joseph Engineering College has gained a good reputation from the past 17 years. This college is known for discipline, with love and care. Students are provided with scholarships from the government as well as from private bodies. We even give concessions to the students. At the same time, they have to perform well in their academics to retain the concession throughout.”
"We have also Incubation Centre and Tinkering Lab. These are facilities provided for the students to perform well in their academics,” said Dr Rio D’Souza.
Courses offered
SJEC offers BE Degree Programmes, Post Graduate Degree Programmes, and Doctoral Programmes.
Under BE, students can opt for Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Civil Engineering.
Under PG, students can opt for an MBA (Finance/HR/Marketing-Dual Specialization), MCA, MTech in Computer Science & Engineering and Digital Electronics and Communication Systems.
Job placements
The principal of SJEC Dr Rio D’Souza says, “SJEC aims to match the requirements of the corporate world with the aspirations of the students, thereby facilitating the achievement of synergy between the two. There are various placement activities that are conducted throughout various semesters to make them industry-ready. Over the years SJEC campus placements have seen an upward marching graph while longing for better placements of students in core industries. About 80% of the eligible students from the circuit branches are placed every year. Companies like TCS, Infosys, L&T Infotech, Tech Mahindra, ITC Infotech, Mphasis, Amazon Web Services, Federal Bank, Byju’s, Decathlon, HDFC Bank, Bosch, Novigo Solutions and many more have visited the college to recruit our students. We are also proud to say that every year one or two of our students get placement in Indian Army and Navy sector.”
Awards
When it comes to awards and laurels, St Joseph Engineering College is always at the forefront. SJEC was recognized as the Transformational Leader in Engineering Education by Indo Universal Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE), ranks at the university level, best project awards at Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) Student ProjectProgram (SPP) and even been awarded as the Best Performing College in the State by KSCST.
Student strength and facilities
The overall strength at SJEC is over 2500 students in addition to 340 teaching and non-teaching staff. As many as 800 students stay in the hostel and 25 staff members reside in staff quarters. Almost 60% of the students come from different places for whom SJEC provides transport facilities. Nearly 10 buses bring students from places like Puttur, Moodabidri, Talapady, Kinnigoli, Mulky to the campus in addition to buses that ply within the city limits of Managluru. SJEC also maintains greenery throughout the campus with solar roofing and water harvesting.
SJEC has one of the best and well-appreciated libraries. The college also has Dispensary, where doctors are available on call, in addition to having a tie-up with Father Muller Hospital for medical emergencies. There are Mentors for every 15 students and Class Advisers who guide students not only in regular studies but also in their career.
Sports facilities
The Physical Education Department is committed to maintaining the physical fitness of students throughout their studies at SJEC. Physical Education Department is well-established with all sports and games amenities like 400m Athletic track, Football and Cricket fields, Volleyball, Throwball and Basketball Courts, Shuttle Badminton Courts for both men and women, well-equipped multi gymnasium facility for boys and girls in their respective hostels, indoor facilities like Table Tennis, Carrom, Chess etc.
With a strong focus on inculcating good sportsmanship spirit and discipline, SJEC conducts regular training and practice sessions on various sports and games. Students have been able to showcase consistent performance in various University, as well as national level, meets, and the institution is proud of their achievements.
Director of St Joseph Engineering College Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza says, "St Joseph Engineering College is one of the very few institutes in the region to have got the accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA). I would say it is mainly owing to the Outcome Based Education practiced at the college, which has been instrumental in moulding our students into budding professionals, who are technically competent and socially responsible.
