Mangaluru, May 27: Diocese of Mangaluru disbursed financial help to the poor students for the purpose of education on Monday, May 27 at Bishop’s House. Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha distributed the cheques to the students.

Addressing the gathering, the bishop said that the Catholic Church is of the poor and for the poor. “The money that is given to poor students involves the savings and sacrifices done by Catholics during Lenten season. The CODP of Mangaluru diocese organized this whole campaign and identified the poor students.” Motivating the students to help other poor students by the ways doing their personal contribution after they get jobs, he said, “A generous giver receives in hundred fold, follow the law of gratuitousness.”

The diocese of Mangaluru gives this educational help as an annual feature for the past many years to help the poor students though CODP. Financial help was disbursed to 89 students belonging to all faiths. Mangaluru diocese has helped more than 150 students this year. 

Fr Oswald Montero, director, CODP, welcomed and compered the programme. He informed the students about the project in his opening address. He mentioned that this amount is gathered from the sacrifices that Catholics made in Lenten season.

Parents of the students were also present for the programme. CODP staff led the prayer.
