Five militants killed, two policemen injured in Kashmir


Jammu/Srinagar, May 31 (IANS): Five militants were killed and two policemen injured on Friday in three gunfights in Jammu and Kashmir.

Police sources said security forces carried out an operation in Midoora village of Tral area of Pulwama district where militants hiding in a house opened fire.

"Two militants were killed in this encounter. Their identity and group affiliation is being ascertained," a police officer said.

Reports said the house in which the militants were hiding was destroyed.

Internet services was suspended in Awantipora area of Pulwama district as a precaution.

Earlier, three militants were killed and two policemen injured in two gunfights in Shopian and Kishtwar districts.

Police said security forces started a cordon and search operation in Marwah village in Kishtwar in Jammu region following information that some militants were hiding there.

"As the cordon was tightened, the militants opened fire, triggering an encounter," a police officer said. "Two policemen sustained injuries in this encounter."

In another gunfight in Dragad-Sugan village of Shopian district in the Kashmir Valley, police said the body of a militant was recovered. Earlier, the police found two bodies of militants along with their weapons.

The fighting took place in an orchard in Dragad-Sugan village after security forces surrounded the area.
