Attari, Jun 5: The armed forces of India and Pakistan, exchanged sweets on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday at the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab. As soon as the border gates opened, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers, shook hands and greeted each other.

in an atmosphere of bonhomie and festivity, Indian Border Security Force (BSF) commandant Mukund Kumar Jha received sweets from Pakistani Wing Commander Usman Ali at the India Pakistan Wagah Border post, about 35 km from Amritsar.

Personnel of the border guarding forces have been traditionally exchanging sweets on religious and national festivals of the two countries, barring a few occasions when the diplomatic relations were not good.

The sweets exchange is considered as a gesture to go a long way in promoting peace, harmony and compassion in the true spirit of the festival.

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims around the world to mark the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Each year, the dates of Ramadan and Eid change according to the Muslim calendar which is based on the phases of the moon. As per Muslin belief, more than the celebration part, they consider Eid as a time to remember Allah and thank him for the strength he bestowed for a successful Ramadan.
