Bengaluru: 907 farmers committed suicide in state in just one year

Bengaluru, Jun 7: In the last year alone, 907 suicide cases of farmers are registered in the state. Out of these, already a compensation of Rs five lac each is given for 657 cases. As many as 187 cases got rejected and only 63 are pending to be decided.

The highest number of suicides in the state has taken place in Belagavi district. Mysuru and Haveri district are in the second and third spot respectively. In the district of Udupi only one case was registered and suitable compensation is already disbursed to the affected family. Out of the 104 cases reported in the district of Belagavi, compensation is given in 80 cases. While 17 cases are rejected, seven are pending to be decided.

Out of the five cases reported in the district of Dakshina Kannada, compensation has been already given to three. Two are rejected. In the district of Kodagu, seven cases were reported and compensation is given to four. Out of the cases reported in the district of Davanagere, compensation is given to 39 cases. As many as 15 cases are rejected. A total of 27 cases out of the 35 reported in the district of Chikkamagaluru are given compensation. In the district of Shivamogga, out of the 35 cases, compensation is provided to 25 cases, eight cases have got rejected and two are pending to be decided.

In the district of Hassan, out of the 23 cases of suicide of farmers reported, compensation is provided to 10 while the rest got rejected. In Uttara Kannada district, out of the eight cases reported, compensation is given for three cases and the rest are rejected. In the district of Chitradurga, out of the seven cases reported, compensation is given for five cases, while two got rejected.

    Being a Small farmer is no longer sustainable. The world is being taken over by corporates. Agricultural universities, businesses, NGOs should target this situation with adequate help from Govt to provide long term solution.

    All of them are smale farmers and illiterate...... while some land lords have access land and not cultivation though they enough water resources.. only unfertile land and without water resources are with smale illiterate farmers .... and they didn't know government facilities and only smale cultivation is the only source for them.... government is not doing anything for smale scale farmers...... this is the duty of local punchayate to help poor smale farmers to avoid these suicides...

    I think instead of giving these lacs to familys of suecided persons ,could have saved many of them ,if only loan was waved off first.Our officials also are working in a slow motion ,that itself kills one before you kill yourself.One has to "offer"something before you put a signature.Otherside these farmers should realize that they leave back their familys in a utter problem suppose they suecide..When will they think of it?Someone must counsell these people in their dare powerty.

    The less you say, the better. Modi govt did not give the 50% grant Karnataka govt requested, to waive off farmers' loan, it instead gave to Nitish Kumar govt. Look now what happened - Nitish Kumar royally kicked Shah and gang. Siddu govt still waived, as much as it could.

    Madam State Government is responsible for the deaths of Farmers. Waiving loans or dolling out compensation is not Governments only job. They should have undertaken deeper and serious study and remedial steps should have been initiated.
