Udupi, Jun 8: This news from Udupi is about an odd marriage, matrimony of two frogs. It may come as a shock but it is true. Locals have married off two wild frogs with a means to appease the Lord Varuna.

As per Hindu mythology, Varuna is the god of oceans. According mythical beliefs union of wild frogs will bless the lands with rainfall and rid them of drought.

The marriage conducted is required to follow the traditional Hindu rituals. The frogs in context here are the bride Varsha from Kolalagiri and the groom Varuna from Kalsanka. The marriage took place on Saturday, June 8 at Hotel Kediyoor.

The ceremony was arranged by Nityananda Olakadu, Udupi district citizen committee trust and Pancharathna seva trust.

When asked about this matrimony, Nityananda Olakadu, one of the organizers said, ''There is a severe water problem in Udupi. People are struggling to do daily chores. This kind of a ceremony has taken place seven years ago as well. The myth which surrounds the frogs is that if there is croaking there will be rain. Human beings have destroyed this environment and continue to do so. We hope that this way Udupi will be blessed with rainfall soon.''

He added that this action was met criticism and considered superstitious. He argued that it is all about faith. Further, he said that the path of faith has never been easy and that it has always been critiqued.

The ceremony was seen by several locals who gathered out of sheer curiosity.

Once the ceremony concluded, as per the tradition food was served to the crowd by the organizers.

Once again frog marraige to get rain.!Poor frogs had to wait to jumpout from these superstitious people .whether rain comes or not whoom does it matter.Important is all of them got a free meal.Instead of wasting time for frogs ,they can invest more time to see that envirement doesnt get dirty ,try to plant one or two plants when one tree is cut.How many trees are cut for money and export without licence and do money ?

Hippocrats. Use the water what you have sparely and not lavish.Let the water from earth is drawn with pumps forcefully ,then how can one await water when not rains?Poor frogs too are suffering when no rain and water is there.soon will be our India like Africa .Grow vegetables and fruits only in small amount so that later rest not thrown.Because fruits and vegetables grown too need water.Hope this time frogs and people too will be happy when soon rain falls.

More than superstition it is cruelity on animal. Police should register case against this group under Prevention of cruelity against animals act. Rather than doing such things these guys could have taken lead in cleaning water bodies around udupi

Wow. These frogs are so happy finally being married. Only things is frogs are not aware of what has happened to them in human ways.

If we understand the frogs ways of marring them for sure all frogs relatives uncles aunts brothers sisters of frogs would have attended and same token meals for frogs relatives would have been arranged for this ceremony. Then for sure rain will pour. Currently frogs are not.aware of the ceremony and food given to human on thier wedding ceremony has no impact on couples and frogs relatives. India has many celebrities like milk to snakes, frog weddings,

Please keep our reputation...as we all know DK and udupi well know for more smart and educated peoples...
Instead of doing this please grow some trees and make some good urban plans so that we dont disturb much our nature and we have enough rain fall and water.

No rains, it is the effect of destroying ever green virgin forests in the western ghats for the foolish Yettinahole project. Both the proposer of the Yettinahole project so called Vidhwan Mr Veerappa Moilly and consented and approved man Sri Sadananda Gowda are sole responsible for the the man made mess of the Yettinahole Project. We take Nature for granted and destroy it for our selfish ends and Nature always has last laugh when it takes its full revenge on mankind. WE REAP WHAT WE SOW. Both these men should get washed away in the Yettinahole water. The earlier the human beings realize it, it is better for everybody, else it will be a disaster. JAI HIND.

Deforestation is the root cause, of this ecological disaster... we r loosing forest cover due to rapid urbanisation, rampant mining too, has destroyed pristine western ghats... Wonder how marrying frogs will bring forth abundant rainfall !!!!

I wish these marriages are performed often so that there's plenty of rains and also free meals. First let's stop cutting trees and building concrete jungles every where with ground covered by concrete interlocking tiles as well as throwing plastic each every place. Marrying these poor creatures is the only solution to receive rains then God help us. We humans have destroyed the environment due to our selfishness and greed making these poor creatures almost extinct.

at one end people are doing spiritual things of marrying off frogs, some japas and prayers. On the other hand 800 trees are cut in Kodagu just to make way for one home stay last month.
Drama of the highest order. Even God will not be pleased because human beings are destroying his beautiful creation for their greed.
