Udupi, May 9: The stretch of the national highway 17 from Padubidri to Muloor in the district witnessed a number of accidents in the morning of Saturday May 9, that started occurring immediately after the first major rain in the region started to soak the region. In five accidents which occurred near Muloor near Padubidri, over 30 people were injured. The nature of injuries varies, and many of them have been grievously injured. Depending on the gravity of injuries, they have been admitted into different hospitals in the district.

In a car-motor bike collision that occurred near Bobbaryanakatte of Muloor today, the bike rider sustained grave injuries. Four persons travelling in the car too were injured in the accident. In another accident that took place opposite Narayanaguru Sabha Bhavan in Muloor, a car and bus were involved in a collision. In this accident, two occupants of the car sustained serious injuries.

In front of Koppalangady Community Hall, over ten passengers suffered injuries of different degrees, after the private bus in which they were travelling, skidded and tumbled. Two iron ore transportation trucks coming from opposite directions also got involved with a head-on collision, as drivers of both these trucks were looking at the accident scene rather than the road ahead. Both the drivers have sustained serious injuries in the accident. A car following one of the ore trucks closely from behind, struck the truck from behind at great spead, injuring those travelling in it. The Omni was badly mangled in the accident.

The five accidents that occurred within a stretch of one kilometre at Muloor near Padubidri threw the traffic on the highway out of gear. The movement of vehicles remained paralyzed due to the spate of accidents for about four hours, right from the morning. The policemen from Kaup police station worked hard to restore normalcy.

A local social worker, supported by an army of local people, helped the policemen in restoring some order in the traffic. The traffic woes were complicated by the fact that express buses and other buses move on this road with a few seconds separating them, along with so many tourist vehicles that are moving about in the holiday season and the vehicles carrying people to auspicious occasions, who were afraid they would be late.

In addition to the above, there have been scores of minor accidents. The accident toll at the first heavy rain of the season has made the people highly apprehensive. Several local people argued, that the oil being spilled by the trucks carrying fish, gets stored on the roads and at the first rain, vehicles travelling on the greesy mixture caused by oil and water, skid, thereby posing  the vehicles and the lives of the inmates to grave danger.

RTO do not have road rules. roads are not good for modern traffic. In education everything India has only it lacks road safety courses and diplomas.  My opinion is every post in the RTO must be with diploma in Road code like western countries where the student must learn all road construction and safety rules.

It is indeed sad to see so many people getting involved in accidents. Before we start pointing our fingers at politicians,RTO, others let us analyze our behaviour...

    1. Photos 3/4, as noted by Ronald udupi reveal the ugly side of vehicle maintenance...Bald tyres! When we spend thousands on a DVD system etc for vehicle, why dont we spend on Tyres? 2. After driving in the four lane highway near Mangalore, I have realized that even that road is not safe! Many two wheelers still go in the wrong side, heavy vehicles ply on fast lane.etc., 3. We need to Remember that any amount of rules regulations do not work, unless we discipline our driving behavior, keep our vehicles in good condition.

Two weeks of unprecendented number of trauma/accident cases pouring into our hospitals prompted me to write this...Agony of the victims, anxiety of near and dear ones can not be expressed in words...

These accidents should be seriously thought for sure. But as I viewed the pictures, the first rain and the starting of monsoon season, I could memorize my school days especially the picture of a muddy and slippery road in second photograph the one which I liked the most. WOW!!!! Awesome feeling!!!!!! It''s just a dream in this gulf region. Childhood is great and hats off. Thanks again to Durga Ditials and DWMN team.

There is no solution until we get two lanes to drive either side of the devider and people get used to it! Roads are more busy compared to last many decades when NH17 was formed. Politicians do not have the courage to develop road. they are more interested in communal based politics.

Beginning few days of monsoon is always dangerous to drive due to slippery roads . Rain water mixes with spilled oil /grease & dirt which forms dangerous slippery foam and when a vehicle passes through without proper tyre /worn out tyres at high speed and abrupt breaking in a curve an accidents is guaranteed. Our great Drivers in NH 17 have No idea of any risk / hazardous posed during rain .They feel HIGH speed , overtaking & killing innocent people is their Job. RTA /transport officer have No control of these vehicle & No authority concerned to maintain this NH17 even after so many ghastly accidents.

So many accidents in one day, it is really a matter of great concern.Hope the people admitted in the hospital will have fast recovery. The state and central govt must finish the two way three lane road NH 17 linking Mangalore- Kundapure as soon as possible.Only concrete road can sustain the rain and heavy traffic in this high way. Will the govt take proper action to avoid these kind of deadly accidents.?

RTO should seriously think of introducing International RTO Laws. International standard has a set of rule for every situation. There should be a different speed limit to the National Highways at the a) Town limits and b) Vacant region. Public Transport should have a different Speed Limit that should be displayed on the rear side of every bus. Accident vehicles on the Highway should be cleared immediately once the police complete their FIR. Until then the police should put a Hazard Board on both side of the accident site. NPWD should not be allowed to do anything and everything as per their wishes they should follow a set of Road Safety rules at the time of Digging, on all the Abruptly Unfinished Roads, at the point of Road Dividers. Vehicles should not be allowed to park on the carriageways in any Highways, neither at the Check Posts nor at the Bus Stops. Vehicles with Protruding/Overloaded goods jetting out from the front & back of the vehicle should never be allowed neither inside the Town/City nor in the Highways. Our RTOs are busy catching vehicles over speeding in a stretch of 500 meters at Jyothi down the Mercara Road and showing blind eyes on overloaded, Goods-Jetting/Rash-Driving Buses, Lorries, Tempos & Goods-Rickshaws.

Tyres of overtuned vehicles do not look healthy. Motorists should pay attention to the condition of tyres to avoid mishaps!
