Shweta is the daughter of late Dr Sheshadri and Dr Shobha Sheshadri. Dr Shobha works for KMC Manipal and resides at the KMC quarters.

Shweta is currently in Bangalore and hence was unreachable, but the college management has expressed its delight on the success of Shweta, as they were expecting one of the top places for her.

Sunil Rao is the son of Shreesha Rao and Sudha couple of Jodukatte in Karkala. Sunil identifies the best guidance he got in his college and his perseverance as the secret of his success. He is aimed at pursuing his higher education in Electronics and Mechanical Engineering. According to him, the support from parents and the Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva is also responsible for his success.

Sunil’s father had died in an accident months before his examination. He has secured 100 each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, 90 in English and 97 in Sanskrit.

The Alva’s PU College has registered 95 per cent results. Out of 1,385 students appeared for the exams, 1,356 have passed. The college has achieved 98 pc results each in Science and Commerce sections, and 95 pc in Arts section.

Only 43.34 pc pass II PUC

Indicating an abysmal performance, the second year pre-university annual examination recorded an overall pass percent of 43.34 across the State.

Of the total 6,18,615 lakh students who appeared for the examination only 2,62,802 lakh have passed. The II PUC results blatantly indicate that 57 per cent of students who appeared for the examination have failed.

About 50.88 percent of fresh candidates with 27.05 per cent of private candidates and 25.05 per cent of repeaters have passed. District-wise, Dakshina Kannada has obtained the highest pass percentage with 80.92, followed by Udupi with 80.62 per cent and Uttara Kannada with 65.16 pass per cent. Bangalore South has recorded a pass percent of 62.01 and Bangalore North 61.53 pass percent.

Combination wise, Arts recorded a low pass percent of 41.63, followed by 63.71 pass percent in Commerce and 55.86 pass per cent in Science. Girls have fared well with 56.11 pass per cent as against 45.57 pass per cent obtained by boys.

Despite measures like remedial teaching and bridge courses offered, the results have not crossed over 50 percent. It may be recalled that the March 2008 examination recorded a pass per cent of 41.31.

SG Hegde, Commissioner, Department of Pre-University Education (PUE) said that the two per cent increase in the result was an improvement. “Remedial teaching, provision of guest lecturers, compulsory attendance by students were some of the factors for the change in the results. However there is a need to improve the quality of teachers in all districts to obtain better result”.

Hegde alleged that the multiple choice question paper pattern followed in the SSLC examination was one of the reasons for the low pass percent in Arts combination.

“Students, especially of Arts, combination are unable to write descriptive answers and hence the pass percentage has been affected” remarked Hegde.

Zero pass percent

Seventy four colleges in the state have the ingnominous record of zero percent pass. Of the total colleges that have failed to get even a single candidate over the line, 45 are unaided. The list also includes 28 government PUC colleges and one aided college.

Hegde said ÒThe number of colleges that have zero pass percentage are distributed across all districts of the stateÓ.  He indicated that some of these colleges will be identified and be given special attention for the coming academic year.  “We intend to set up a committee from the PUE Department which will visit the district PU colleges that have scored zero pass percentage. Based on the report produced by the committee, remedial action will be taken for the improvement of results” Hegde added.

Education Minister Speaks: Reacting to the II PUC low pass percentage, Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said, “SSLC question paper, shortage of lecturers, motivation of lecturers are to be examined for the over all improvement of results. We will review various aspects to ensure better results from next year. Expert opinion and feedback will be considered for the changes that will be accomadated for improvement of PU results”.
