Bahrain: 'Kudlotsava' Takes off with Kabaddi, Drawing and Cookery Contests

Bahrain, May 10: The grand gala Kudlotsava 2009 Bahrain took off with a bang with three fun-filled eventful competitions at the Delmon International Hotel, Bahrain, at 9.00 p m  commencing with Men’s Kabbadi Tournament for the entire cross-section of the people hailing from Karnataka.    Eight muscle-packed Kabbadi teams picked from the Karnataka community in Bahrain, vied for the Men’s honours, displaying their Kabbadi skills uniquely, as best as they could.    

A large crowd of audience, comprising well-wishers, sponsors and wives of the Kabbadi players were seen encouraging, applauding and cheering the players every moment as the tournament was continuing.    The Kabbadi teams and players kept the crowd enthralled by the Hotel Poolside with “Kabbadi, Kabbadi, Kabbadi” all the way upto 3.00 p.m. by which time the results were known, much to the joy and delight of everyone present.


































The winners of the Kudlotsava 09 Men’s Kabbadi Tournament:

I Place Winners: METELCO BAHRAIN TEAM

II Place Runners-up: NEW UDUPI RESTAURANT TEAM

Special Kabbadi Skills prizes chosen by a panel of competent judges were given as under:

Best Rider: Arun (Chak De India Team)

Best All-rounder: Stanley (New Udupi Restaurant Team)

Best Catcher: Peris (Metelco Bahrain Team) 

The children’s much-awaited drawing competition followed at 10.00 a.m. in three different age categories.    There were in total 64 entrants in all the three categories for the Children’s competition.  

For the Sub-Juniors, 6 to 9 years section, a choice of three topics were given, namely, a fruit basket or flower basket of Dinosaur.   There were 27 competitors.  All the sub-junior participants opted for either of the first two and brought out their creative drawing skills displaying a basketful of fruits or flowers for the judges, giving them a hard time which one of the best to take! 

The  Sub-Juniors 6 to 9 years Drawing Competition winners were:

I Place –  Kunal K. Shetty

II Place – Sakshi Sharath Kumar

III Place – Anshul Sudhir Shetty


For the Juniors, 10 to 13 years section, again a choice of three topics were given: my favourite park in the neighbourhood or my school playground or a busy Manama round-about/street in Bahrain.     Their imaginations in drawing skills gave the judges a real hard time to select the best from 27 competitors.

The Juniors 10 to 13 years Drawing Competition Winners were:

I Place – Shezad B. A.

II Place – Danik Nithyanand

III Place – Shrinidhi Shridhar Acharya


For the Seniors, 14 to 18 years section, the theme of the drawing topic was given by the Sponsors, Phillips Bahrain by their representative Mr. Unni.   There were 10 competitors in this category.  The Serniors were asked to draw a Green World or Earth, in the context of the present global warming fears to the preservation of Nature for the Future.    The Seniors brought out a vivid imagination in color of a Green World, the judges impressed by their sense of creativity and imagination in bringing out what they can expect few years from now in a green world where they would be the main subjects of endurance.

The Seniors 14 to 18 years Drawing Competition Winners were:

I Place – Helisa  D’Souza

II Place – Anjana Srinivas

III Place – Pooja Suresh

A panel of nine judges from a cross-section of schools and eminent personalities judged the children’s Drawing Competition, all of whom were impressed at the children’s creativity, originality and drawing skills.

The Ladies Cookery Competition kicked-off at 11.00 a.m. with a variety of dishes in typical Mangalorean or Karnatakan tastes and likings.    This competition brought in the best of ladies’ culinary skills with a number of Mangalorean  dishes, curries and desserts in three categories – veg., non-veg and desserts.     The judges, most of them from Bahrain’s top “Kudla” restaurants sure had a mouth-watering tasting and judging time.  There were 15 ladies  competing and the winners declared were:


Non-Vegetarian Recipe Winners:    

I Place: Meenaz Azeez (Recipe: Badami Dham Chicken)

II Place: Prothima Shetty (Recipe: Mutton Green Masala)

III Place: Anitha Rodrigues (Recipe: Shell-fish Pundigassi)


Vegetarian Recipe Winners:

I Place – Sujyothi J. Shetty (Recipe: Kanchala Gassi)

II Place – Latha Suresh (Recipe: Gujje Kadle Sukka)

III Place – Poornisam S. Rao (Recipe: Kanchala Maavina Menasinakayee)


A special prize was awarded to the Best Health Conscious Recipe by the judges to:

Mrs Agnes Mascarenhas (Recipe: Raagi-ganji)

Incidentally, Mr. Agnes Mascarenhas is the mother of Bahrain resident Anitha Rogdrigues.


Dessert Section Winners:

I Place – Naseema Sayed (dish: Tender Coconut Pudding)

II Place – Sujyothi Shetty (dish: Pumpkin Halwa)

III Place – Hemalatha Shetty (dish: Wheat Payasam)

In a special ceremony commencing at 3.00 p.m. at the Delmon International Hotel after all the events, all the winners were  felicitated and given attractive prizes, various electronic items and useful gadgets which included cooking range.     A raffle draw with attractive prizes and a game of Bingo was organized with maximum participation from all present.

The main sponsors for the events and prizes were: Philips, Central Café, Gulf Russian Restaurant and Al Shereen Electricals.

Anand Lobo compered the programs capably assisted by his dedicated team of volunteers to make the day eventful and memorable and thanked all the participants, Sponsors, audience for their presence and participation.      

Where else can we find a taste of “Kudla” for all the folks from Karnataka, enthusiastically begun, compered, performed and concluded?     It can only happen in Kudlotsava 2009!     And there is more of it every weekend upto the finale on 5th of June, 2009 with a number of other competitions and programs.    Watch out for more news and feedback in these columns…a taste and liking of Kudlotsava, like never before, and all of it happening the Kingdom of Bahrain.
