Mangalore: Ice creams No Challenge for Kids

Mangalore, May 11: The light house was shattered into pieces and disappeared in a matter of seconds. ‘Light house’ was the special three storeyed ice cream prepared especially for the 16th JCI- Dinky icecream eating competition.

The competition, inaugurated by Superintendent of Police Dr A Subramanyeshwar Rao at Kadri Park here on Sunday evening presented a rare opportunity for kids as well as their parents to participate in a light-hearted competition. A total of 108 children participated in the competition- 39 in the Junior (5-8 age group) category and 69 (9-12) category. At the end, even some of the ladies and gentlemen got an opportunity to prove their talent in gulping icecream.

The most wonderful moment of the competition was when spoons proved irrelevant. Throughout the competition, many children chose to throw away the spoons and handle the icecreams with their bare hands, swallowing it in the biggest possible bites. At the end of the neck to neck competition, (i) Mayur Pai, (ii) Sumanth Shetty and (iii) Shan turned out the winners in the junior section while (i) Yajnesh, (ii) Sana and (iii) Raksha won the senior section.

Competition for ladies and gentlemen were snatched by Harini Vijayendra and Sharath respectively. Competitions were also held for JCI members and their kids.

President of Beary Academy Prof Abdul Rahman, actor Suresh Mangalore and senior JCI member Rangappa gave away the prizes to the winners.

JCI Mangalore President Dr Rahul, Secretary Dinesh, former presidents Vijay Vishnu Mayya, Manjunath D, National Vice President Anil Kumar, Dinky icecream Proprietor Swarnasundar and others were present on the occasion.

respected readers of daiji world, i am the president of JCI Mangalore for the year 2009. Being a doctor myself, I thank you very much for being concerned about the health of our fellow citizens. JCI (Junior Chamber International) is a voluntary organization.  We are a federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs. Our mission is to provide development opportunities that empowers young people to create positive change. This is about JCI. We also do community service. We had given information about this event well in advance. We also distributed pamphlets. We did not restrict this event to the rich or the poor. Kadri park is a well known place in Mangalore. People from all walks of life come there on a Sunday with family. The weather in Mangalore at this time of the year is so hot and humid. Dinky dine is situated right opposite Kadri park. The owner is such a nice gentleman. He made all the arrangements for the public, including water etc etc. The competitors are given one icecream to eat. The ones who ate the fastest were timed and given awards. Believe me, a lot [approx-95%] did not finish ,and we asked them to eat it slowly with their parents. Now to sum up- this competition is not a marketing gimmick.if you get a chance to eat icecream, and win an award for it,at a place where you can enjoy with your family,in the sweltering Mangalore heat, I do not see a problem and I promise you, no one will have a health problem. Even then if you find JCI Mangalore has committed a mistake, I apologize on behalf of my members.

Businesses may create any such promotions or marketing gimmics to create awareness / increase sale of their products. We, parents should keep our children away from such competition to ensure our childrens good health. What if the child insists of gulping the ice cream through out the coming year in preparation for the next year''s competition. Ice creams are any ways high in cholestrol / fat and child obesity is becoming a worldwide problem, Parents beware!!!!!

Mr.Arun-Thanks for your feedback will definetly not send kids for all these activities. Thanks for your advice as well ,we at times need to learn things from you people. The competition for the kids should be for mind and physic and not for stomach which will cause health problems.

The spirit of conducting competition is good one but the choice of competition is not good for kids health....I am not speaking about only our kids mine or yours in particular but it is for who take it if people take topics personally then we cant help...

Everybody seems to be opposing this competetion...!!! Here the quantity of ice cream is one ice cream and the timing is measured. Generally everybody will eat one ice cream whenever you go to the Ice cream parlour. What is wrong in eating in this competetion.

No doubt on the success of the Dinky Ice cream eating competition ,but dear organizers kindly think of the after effects before you do any competition like this . This is absolutely a business tactic we understand .but why do our parents encourage this ?

Parents please send your children for competitions which are worth participating and not these which will make your child suffer.... I give my 100% on Mr.Percy''s comments. Again this is my personnel thought I don''t know what public feel?Free for comments..

As a organiser I want to clarify everyone that our ice cream eating competition is just for kids to enjoy and it’s not a serious competition as such. We do carefully watch each kid while they are eating the ice cream. We don’t allow them to gulp nor put pressure to hurry up.

Kids just eat it as they wish. Even the quantity of ice cream is not huge as assumed by some daiji readers. We also don’t specify any time limit to eat the ice cream. Whoever eats it fast is considered the winner.

So please don’t comment negatively from aboard on an event which is been successfully held for the past 16 yrs in your hometown. Please do come to Kadri Park next summer to know the TRUTH !!

I agree with Percy. Eating Ice cream in large quantities is definitely a no go. If you didn''t know One scoop of ice cream contains six tea spoons of sugar! and anyone who is diabetic and was never aware could have ill effects. I also agree this is nothing but a marketing gimmick.

I am sure organizers are aware of the ill effects of huge quantities of ice cream but might have never disclosed or carried a warning or disclaimer.

I fully agree with you Percy. Surely this will have an ill effect on young children anything in access is not good. It seems to me that it is a business tactic. I hope organizers are aware of the ill effect of this on the younger generation.

No doubt the 16th JCI- Dinky icecream eating competition would have become a successful one, but I feel gulping a huge quantity of Ice cream within a short time create problems for the young children. Does the organisers realise this? Such competitions should not be encouraged or rather banned. This is my suggestion. I do not know what the public feel about it. Any comments?
