17th LS swearing-in ceremony: SP MP Shafiqur Barq refuses to chant 'Vande Mataram'

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SHP)

New Delhi, Jun 18: The 17th Lok Sabha has commenced. The swearing-in ceremony saw voicing out of slogans such as ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ during Asaduddin Owaisi’s oath. One other minister who came under fire was the Samajwadi Party’s MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq said, “Jahan tak Vande Mataram ka taaluq hai, it is against Islam we cannot follow it,” after which he concluded his oath.

An excerpt of the video was uploaded on the web and comments flooded majorly against Barq.

One user commented stating: “This BSP MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq was the same guy who walked out of Parliament when Vande Matram was being sung in 2013. In the subsequent elections angry voters gave ZERO seats to BSP.”

There were others who showed complete disdain for his action.

“Nahin bolna toh mat bolo, Par Islam ko beech mein kyun le aate hain!”

“How can a religion disallow someone from chanting patriotic slogans!”

During Owaisi's oath taking ceremony, he chanted "Jai bheem, Jai Meem, Takbeer Allah hu Akbar, Jai Hind".

"It is good that they remember such things when they see me, I hope they will also remember the constitution and deaths of children in Muzaffarpur," he added to those who were chanting during his swearing-in ceremony.

To set the record straight, Vande Mataram is a song that was part of the highly controversial novel Anand Math written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. It is full of hate against Muslims.

But those who support the song have either never gone through this vitriolic novel or try to draw wedge in the country. Muslims gave to India 'Sare Jahan Se Achchha...' and Inquilab Zindabad. The first song was written by Allama Iqbal and the second slogan was given by Maulana Hasrat Mohani.

Jana Gana Man is for everyone to sing. But the manner in which Vande Mataram that has nothing to do with patriotism is imposed by BJP governments is ridiculous.

The novel supports British. It is the story of a secret society in Bengal that aims at 'demolishing all domes and mosques' with the help of the British. Such xenophobia is appalling. Still, the men who matter hardly oppose the song as vehemently as it should be done.

To set the record straight, Bankim Chandra's novel Anand Math from where this song has been taken was nearly pro-British and fiercely anti-Muslim. It was written a few decades after 1857 but the novel portrays Muslims are outsiders and enemies.

In this novel, the protagonists exhort others to kill Muslims, clearly spreading hate.

Hindu revivalism is understandable but not fanaticism and blind hate. It was this reason why not only Pt Jawaharlal Nehru but also Subhash Chandra Bose opposed this hymn. No wonder a socialist like Ram Manohar Lohia called the novel a blot on Indian national struggle because it hailed the British.

The BJP 17 th session must have forgoten the history of India and the sacrifice of Muslims. They want us to forge “Khoon se khelenge Holi gar Vatan mushkil main hai” – Ashfaqullah Khan"Inquilab Zindabad": Synonymous with Bhagat Singh, coined by Muslim leader Hasrat Mohani.

Why Bankim Chandra wrote a treacherous novel and 'Vande Mataram' is dear to BJP's earlier generation who never participated in the Indian freedom struggle?
    Jai Hind

Muslim does not bow down (worship) anyone other than the creator (Allah/Ishwar/God), not even his/her mother or motherland, but love the country, support the country, up bring the country, if required we are ready to die for our country.
Majority of leaders who force others to sing Vande Mataram, don’t know how to sign it completely, they failed to sing in front of camera. It is more for a political motive and today they want to make a political gimmick.
I believe if someone says Jai Hind, it is sufficient! Even no harm in chanting Hindustan Zindabad!

There is no compulsion on any Indian to sing Vande Mataram. It is not our national anthem. This issue is being unnecessarily fueled by the chaddis.
Singing Jana Gana Mana that too on special occasions is fine and not in theatres. Nowhere in the world , you will see the national anthem is sung in theates.

    Chatty Shetty, Mangalore,
You are absolutely right. This happens only in India as far as National Anthem is sung in theaters.
