Panaji, Jun 19: Responding to Freedom fighter Chandrakant Pednekar’s remarks on abandonment of ‘plastic-free Goa mission’ started by late CM Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, on Tuesday said it is impossible to complete the mission of proper garbage management without people’s cooperation.
“The major changes cannot be done only by minister’s corporation; all Goans must corporate to resolve the biggest problem Goa is facing today is that of garbage. We need everyone’s cooperation if we want to make Goa plastic-free and garbage-free,” Sawant said.
Speaking at the state event to mark Goa revolution day, on Tuesday, Chandrakant Pednekar, seeing hundreds of plastic water bottles were distributed to the audience at the event, said “Goa was supposed to be free of plastic, but it appears to have become inclusive of plastic. Within months of taking over as CM in 2017, Parrikar had begun publicly shunning plastic use, refusing to accept boquets wrapped in plastic and rejecting food served in plastic plates,” as reported in TOI.
Urging his ministers to take up tree plantation drives, Sawant also encouraged each citizen to plant a tree by obtaining free saplings given from the forest department. He said that saplings will be supplied in bulk if institutions and organisations demand for the same.
