Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SHP)

New Delhi, Jun 26: A bill will be soon presented in Parliament where over Rs 10,000 would be the payable fine for drunk driving, blocking way for emergency vehicles (namely ambulance, fire brigade, PCRs) to name a few.

The Motor Vehicle Act is likely to impose higher penalties with ongoing increase in defaulters of traffic rules. Experts are of the opinion that government should roll back provisions on transport-related issues and focus only on safety.

The bill will provide for uniform driving license and vehicle registration processes across states by setting up online national registers. There is also a provision where guardians or owners are held accountable for crimes by juvenile drivers or riders. The offence will result in cancellation of registration for the vehicle. It also observes a fine of Rs 10 lac in the case of hit-and-run.

The bill was pending for approval in the Rajya Sabha, lapsed when the term of the 16th Lok Sabha ended.

Now approved, it will tackle vital road safety issues.

One suggestion please.. regarding offences by juveniles, why is there a provision to allow them to ride or drive first of all. Instead incentivise someone who brings it to notice to the police if any minor us found riding or driving this will make the parents think twice before allowing their minors to use the vehicle.

Very good move, support this wholeheartedly. Having said that, in our country increase in penalty, also enhances scope of 'extra income' for the authorities.
