Worried over name not in NRC, Assam minor hangs herself

Guwahati, Jun 27 (IANS): A minor girl in Assam's Darrang district committed suicide on Wednesday, with her relatives and members of a students' organization linking the incident to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is being updated across the state.

Relatives of Noor Nahar Begum, 14, of Roumari chapori village said that she hanged herself with the dupatta she was wearing.

"Her name was not included in the draft NRC published by Assam government last year. However, she was sure that her name will appear in the final NRC. Today, when the Assam government published an additional draft list of exclusion, Noor and her family took it to be the final NRC. Noor took the extreme step after her father went to the NRC seva Kendra at Roumari and failed to find her name in the list and told her this over the phone," one of the relatives said.

The family said it was not aware that the list published on Wednesday was not the final NRC but a additional draft exclusion list and that non-inclusion of her name in the list enhances her chance of inclusion of her name in the final NRC to be published on July 31.

All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) leader Abdul Hai visited the deceased's house and blamed the state government for the death.

"There is so much confusion over the NRC process and the government has failed to ensure proper publicity regarding the process, which has led to the incident," he alleged.

Darrang Superintendent of Police, Amrit Bhuyan, however, refuted the claims that the suicide was linked to the NRC and said that police investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the death.

"So far I have not received any report that the girl committed suicide due to NRC. However, our investigation is on," he said.

The Assam government on Wednesday published an additional Draft Exclusion List, consisting names of 102,462 persons, whose names were included in the Draft NRC published on July 30 last year but subsequently been found ineligible due to the different reasons.

When someone commits suicide the police are very quick in filing a case & arresting anyone they suspect for abetting the suicide. Who will be arrested in this case? The Chief Secretary of the State. It is a life that has been lost. Responsibility should be shouldered by the powers that be.

Why one need to suicide self for this issue? If he is citizen of india he would have many kind of records.
If there is no records to show his own existence as indian citizen, then 100% he might be sneaked from bangla.
Those who followed corrupt practice of legalizing all sort of illegal activities under shelter of corrupt political system are now feeling heat, thats all.

Yesterday only we were mourning the deaths of father- daughter duo at the US border and crying foul. I wrote that India will have more deaths than this due to NRC as it goes back to year 1971 as reference point. Now we have a death today which follows many we had during the last published list of NRC. In our enthusiasm to brand foreigners the state is also penalising genuine citizens. Today there was a case of Mrs mondal who spent 3 years in a detention camp due to mistaken identify. She was the only bread winner for her family. In coming days we will see more such cases coming from Assam, North East & Bengal & more people being Branded as illegal. Hope someone enlightens the authorities from the deaths & pain of the people
