Sydney, Jun 27: The University of Sydney along with CSIRO’s Data61 carried out a research which raised alarming results in terms of security for Google Play Store. According to reports, over 2,040 apps are said to be containing malware and most of them are counterfeit in nature.
The image of being a vulnerable platform in comparison to Apple’s App Store has proven to be right. The research team carried out tests over a million Play Store apps. It was also found that popular games such as Temple Run, Free Flow and Hill Climb Racing had counterfeit apps. The research involved the team using the latest technology which involved machine learning techniques. The result of the test conducted was that the team managed to single out the high risk apps.
This state of Play Store is caused due to the fact that the platform is an open source environment where any developer can upload his app. Google has further claimed to be completely aware of the situation and is trying to come up with measures to tackle the safety of the platform.
The Google owned Play Store has also confirmed the time when quarter of a million apps were removed on grounds of being suspicious.
