Mangaluru, Jul 1: Governor of Nagaland P B Acharya inaugurated the maiden district journalists’ convention here at Town Hall on Monday July 1, jointly organised by District Working Journalist Union, Mangluru Press Club and Patrika Bhavana Trust.
Addressing the gathering, P B Acharya said, "It is a great pleasure to take part in the journalists’ convention. The twin districts have worked hard for the upliftment of the nation with its culture and heritage. It is the need of the hour to address the present problems in our state. It is the greatness of our district that we have a broad vision to strengthen our place, but our ultimate goal needs to be making the nation strong.”
District in-charge minister U T Khader said, "We should quit destructive mindset and develop constructive attitude for a clean society. As part of Brand Mangaluru, we need to highlight good things about Mangaluru, and strive hard to get back the olden days of unity and brotherhood.
“Social media is being misused and people have lot trust in it. Hence, print and visual media should take responsibility to bring out truth. The state government will soon implement housing facility for the journalists at taluk level,” he said.
Mangaluru North MLA Dr Bharath Y Shetty said, "Journalists have certain responsibility and role to play in running the democracy. I appreciate the attempt of journalists to create awareness about protecting the environment by highlighting some of the major issues in the society, which needs to be continued.”
Mangaluru south MLA Vedavyasa Kamath said, "Journalists are part of our Constitution as they always work on taking the society in the right direction. When society faces problems, journalists highlight the issue and pressurize the district administration to sort it out.
“Journalists face several challenges and go through a lot of constraints while giving coverage and delivering the right information to people. Journalists have a huge role to play in the overall development of the society. Today, in this convention, several sessions are lined up such as discussion on Brand Mangaluru. Mangaluru is a place where there is all type of connectivity. We should utilize all the resources we have and make Mangaluru a big brand. Even journalists have taken up the initiative of village stay which is commendable. It is a good initiative to take up the problem of society and bring it to the notice of the government to sort out the problems,” he said.

Sessions were held on media and social responsibility, and also on Tulu movies and media. Panel discussion on Brand Mangaluru will also be held where senior journalists from different media houses will take part.
Convenor of convention Jaganath Shetty Bala welcomed the gathering, senior journalist Manohar Prasad compered the event and general secretary Ibrahim Adkastala rendered the vote of thanks.
President of District Working Journalist Union Srinivas Nayak Indaje, president of Karnataka Working Journalist Union Bengaluru Shivanand Thagaduru and senior journalist Ishwar Daithota were present.
