Bengaluru, Jul 7: After 13 MLAs from the Congress and JD(S) coalition resigned on Saturday, and there are rumours that the government will collapse with 10 more MLAs likely to resign on Monday, many meetings have taken place from New Delhi to Bengaluru to save the government. 

In a meeting held here on Sunday in which senior leaders Siddaramaiah, D K Shivakumar, Dr G Parameshwara and Congress in- charge of state K C Venugopal participated, it is said that they have come to a decision to use Tamil Nadu weapon to save the government. 

They believe that this weapon will also teach a lesson to opposition BJP which allegedly has been trying to poach Congress MLAs and cause the fall of government.

What is Tamil Nadu model? 

18 AIADMK MLAs, who owed allegiance to the former party leader, TTV Dinakaran had resigned at once in 2017 which would have caused the fall of government going by numbers. But Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal had disqualified them under ‘The Members of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (Disqualification Grounds of Defection) Rules, 1986’ formed in accordance with the Tenth Schedule (Articles 102 (2) and 191 (2)) of the Constitution. He had not accepted their resignations. 

The 18 MLAs had refused to support chief minister K Palaniswami and revolted against him. The MLAs filed a plea with the Madras HC, questioning the validity of the Speaker’s decision. 

The case had opened a Pandora’s Box of legal questions that the court had to delve into. Justice M Sathyanarayanan, the Supreme Court-appointed third judge of the Madras High Court, had upheld the validity of an order passed by Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal disqualifying 18 AIADMK MLAs under the anti-defection law. Later 17 of these 18 MLAs had lost in by-election.

While this is one of the weapons which can save the coalition, only Speaker Ramesh Kumar can take this decision independently as he does not belong to any party now and no party can dictate him. 

So it is interesting to see what will happen next. Speaker Ramesh Kumar is on leave on Monday and will attend office only on Tuesday. 

Meanwhile chief minister Kumaraswamy will reach city at 7.15 pm from USA via New Delhi and will have series of meetings to ease out the present tension.
