Udupi, Jun 4: It is perhaps only ‘rock’ solid determination and focus that could bring such great results.
Meet Arjun Raghunath, a resident of Manipal and student of Little Rock Indian School at Brahmavar who scored a total of 490 on 500 in the Grade 10 CBSE Examinations. That translates to an astonishing 98 percent marks. It has been reported that the national topper scored 494- just 4 marks more than him, while the Karnataka topper from Bangalore scored 491- just one mark more. In undivided Dakshina Kannada, Krithika Shenoy from Sharada Vidyalaya in Mangalore equaled Arjun’s feat of 490.
It is certain for one to feel on top of the world when one is counted amongst a handful of people who topped an examination given by more than 8 lac students in the country. Ask him if he expected such a result, he is frank in saying that though he did his exams pretty well, this was a pleasant surprise. “I had performed well but I definitely didn't expect such a high percentage. I feel extremely happy and proud to have acquired such good results in class 10” says the young lad who loves to take part in quiz competitions in the region.
Arjun is happy he scored full marks in his favourite subject mathematics. A mind boggling 98 marks in science and social studies and an out-of-this-world 97 marks in English and Hindi (!!) along with his 100 in mathematics make up his 98 percent feat.
We know why mathematics is his favourite subject when we learn that his mother Anitha is a mathematics teacher. Arjun’s father, Raghunath is a faculty at a management institute. The son of the two ‘teachers’ has decided to take up computers along with physics, chemistry and mathematics in his PUC which he will continue at Little Rock.
One wonders if studying in small towns away from the competition-intensive cities and metros is a disadvantage. Arjun disagrees. He says there is no such difference. “Even though Manipal and Brahmavar are small, we have all kinds of facilities. An internet connection and computer helps a lot and also a supportive family. There is not much more that is needed to perform well, though you yourself need to work hard,” says the wise young man whose hobbies are to read classics and play football.
Question him on what profession he would like to pursue and he says he’s not sure. What he is sure of, is from where he would like to do it. “I definitely want to get into the IITs and pass out from there,” says Arjun. If one were to go by his name, there is hardly any chance he would miss his target. He already has an email ID that reads ‘the third panadava’.
