Mangaluru, Jul 22: Retired professor, department of civil engineering, IISc Bengaluru, Prof K S Jagadish inaugurated a three-day faculty development programme (FDP) on Forensics in Civil Engineering at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) in the city on Monday, July 22, organized by the department of Civil Engineering of the college.

Addressing the gathering, Prof K S Jagadish said, "This is a fascinating subject for a three-day programme, about the failures of Civil Engineering. Failures are the stepping stone for success. But unfortunately, in Civil Engineering, it will turn into disaster. Sometimes engineers fail to understand. So in order to test, it is better to artificially simulate, then one can learn. Other than engineer failures, there are local failures, such as potholes which have to be attended. Even theere are failures in planning, where civil engineers are involved often.”

Dr Rio D’Souza, principal, St Joseph Engineering College said, "Forensic is the unique title for the three-day programme. Forensic is about the failures in Civil Engineering and need to learn from it. Only the engineers of any branch know where our faults are and correct ourselves. This is much needed programme for Civil Engineering on forensic.”

Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director, St Joseph Engineering College said, "Building safety has been the major concern, where due to building collapse several people lose their lives and get trapped. We can save lives, if we have the prior knowledge about buildings. Here is where theforensic comes into picture. The Civil Engineering department has done a commendable job in organizing this programme.”

Dr B Radheshyam, HOD, Civil Engineering welcomed the gathering. Ajith B rendered the vote of thanks. Bhavya and Prashanth compered the programme.
