School teacher murdered by husband in front of students

Madurai, Jul 23: A school teacher from a government aided school at Thirumangalam, near Madurai in Tamil Nadu, was stabbed to death by her husband, in front of her students on Monday.

G Rathidevi, 35, of Sithanendal village near Kariapatti was murdered by her husband, G Gurumuneeswaran, a native of Omsakthi Nagar in Ramanathapuram, over a family dispute. She had been teaching at the school for the last three and half years.

As reported in TOI, police sources told the publication, that the murder happened around 3.45 pm while Rathidevi was teaching class VIII students in the school. Gurumuneeswaran surrendered at the local police station after the murder. Rathidevi was married to Gurumuneeswaran six years ago and the couple have a son and a daughter who are twins. Rathidevi separated from her husband ten months back due to family dispute and was living in her native place.

A civil engineer by profession, Gurumuneeswaran worked abroad and returned to India three years ago and settled here. After parting ways with his wife, he moved to Virudhunagar. The children stayed with their mother.

On Monday, during school hours, Gurumuneeswaran took permission from the school security and went into the classroom located on the second floor. After heated exchange of words, Gurumuneeswaran stabbed Rathidevi with a knife which he had hidden under his clothes even as the students in the classroom screamed. The teacher collapsed and died after a few minutes. Gurumuneeswaran left the place before other teachers could reach the spot. Thirumangalam deputy superintendent of police, Arun visited the school and conducted an inquiry. The town police have registered a case and arrested the accused.
