Mangalore, Jun 7: The residents near Ullal seashore are living in fear of the sea erosion due to the slipping of the stones stacked in an effort to control the high tides which cause such erosion.

Two days of strong rainfall is giving tense moments to the people of Mukkacheri, Kotepura, and  Mogaveerapatna. They are hoping for a permanent solution to the issue soon.

This problem which has existed for three decades has been dealt with by the district administration by dumping boulders along the sea shore.

“The sea erosion will not stop unless a permanent solution is found other than putting stones by the sea shore”, said Mohammad, a senior citizen and a resident of Mukkacheri. He says this is a perennial problem for the past thirty years as the high tides during the monsoon increase the water level in the sea.

A woman from the fishermen community said, “When the rain starts we see the politicians and other officials visiting the area. But we do not know if they come here with genuine concern or to enjoy the tricke played by the sea”.

Ummer, a resident of Mukkacheri adds, “The statements by the politicians have lost their luster. Each minister who visited the spot had promised a permanent solution but only the stacking of large stones has been done”.

Most of the residents say that the power of the tides cannot be diminished by loose boulders. A strong wall built to be technically strong in controlling the tides will only be helpful in setting the minds of the residents here at peace.

The proposal sent by the district administration to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has not been cleared yet.

The proposal is to construct a blockade along the sea shore, estimated at Rs 291 crore. As per the port officers, the draft which is an ideal one but the clearance from the ADB is the only way to secure financial aid.

“The sea erosion will be in lesser compared to what it was earlier, due to the boulders dumped here”, said an elderly person hoping that the slipping down of the boulders would stop soon.

Its stupid to expect the sea not to erode those small stones. the power of the nature is too much for small stones to stop for long. dumping stones is a scam thats been going on for decades! use mangrove instead! but no, people will be led to believe that these stone breakwaters will stop the fury of nature. worse still, there are opportunists who will build new houses every succeeding year at the same spot and claim compensation. disgusting!

The problem to solve seashore erosion is simple , the Government must start honestly creating a break water wall with concreat stapids and some boulders away from the beaches about 1 kms parellel to each other and leaving passage inbetween for fisher man''s boats to pass (Just like they keep road blocks to reduce cars speed) it may cost more but its a permenent solution, only a Government who loves Mangalore will do that and not try to fill his own pockets just like they fix our roads before and after rains. (we the people have to wake up and act before it is too late) by putting boulders on the beachs one day we will have no more beaches but the politcian will have money and public will boulders.

Nice photographs....The guy''s who are shown in the photographs will never learn a lesson...slightest mistake by them will make them suffer. Even their swimming skills will not help in front of such mighty waves.

What our Janaprathinishi`s were doing all year round. it is known since century that rainy season in coastal belt in havoc and tension to fishermans shetlement. We have money to wave farmers laon, to build mega infrastructure, but dont we have some croes to make simple concrete strutcre and lay scientifically to have problems of sea erosion.

The pictures look scary. It is sad that despite years of coastal erosion we have not had our heads around it .It is a difficult task and people around the world have tried various methods. Wide sand beaches are the best way to control erosion. Sea walls only provide limited protection unless there is beach sediment control.

As mentioned by Bulsam Concrete tetrapods are aeefective so also armour porous stone walls of more than two tonnes. Massive walls made of cellular concrete have also been tried. Creation of hard points along the shore is an economical alternative. I am not an engineer but have read a bit around it as I lived near to the coast in DK for several years .We seem to be losing out battle to the nature.

In coastal engineering like in the case of our coast, a Tetrapod is a four-legged concrete structure used as armour unit on breakwaters. The Tetrapod''s shape is designed to dissipate the force of incoming waves by allowing water to flow around rather than against it and to reduce displacement by allowing a random distribution of Tetrapods to mutually interlock.

The barrier material used in breakwaters, such as boulders etc. tended to become dislodged over time by the force of the ocean constantly crashing against them. Tetrapods and similar structures are often numbered so any displacement that occurs can be monitored through satellite photographs.
