Bangalore, Jun 10: Chief Minister (CM) B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday June 9, warned the officials who behave arrogantly and carelessly with the general public and the people's representatives, that he would be compelled to crack the whip if they do not mend their ways. He repeated this warning he made on these lines in earlier meetings, at a meeting of the regional commissioners, deputy commissioners and zilla panchayat chief executive officers held here on Tuesday June 9.
"The people neither want nor like high-handed officers who are intoxicated with power. They can not tolerate such behaviour. The officials have to correct their style of functioning and behave in a way that is in tune with our culture. “I do not want to punish any one, however, I will be compelled to take stern action if they do not work as per the expectations of the government and the people," he added.
He assured, that those officials who work efficiently and honestly, will get full support of the government. If they fail to work conscientiously and diligently, the government will have to explore other options, he said in a veiled threat. The CM expressed his displeasure at the less-than satisfactory progress achieved in some of the districts. He added, that he has already instructed the chief secretary to make a list of inefficient officials.
He advised the officials to visit the BPL families, fill in applications at their doorsteps and sanction their needs on the spot. He told them to give importance to maintaining law and order and ensure that no atrocities on women and scheduled communities occur within their jurisdictions. He also said he expected officials to respond promptly in case of monsoon-related tragedies and warned that the government will not tolerate delaying tactics or lethargy on their part.
Revenue minister Karunakar Reddy, who is one of the mining barons to have revolted against the Chief Minister, stayed away from the above meeting, in an apparent display of his displeasure. Being the revenue minister, his presence was very much necessary in the meeting. The meeting started at 10.30 am, but the three mining barons of Bellary flew to Bellary in a helicopter at around 11 am. It is customary and mandatory for the revenue minister to be present in the meetings convened by the Chief Minister, particularly so in this case, as the officials who attended the meeting come under the revenue department. The Reddy brothers and Sriramulu were in the city since Monday and conducted a meeting their supporters on Monday night. They chose to fly to Bellary instead of attending the meeting.
It will be interesting to watch what action the Chief Minister will initiate against the three ministers from Bellary for snubbing him.
