Mumbai, Jul 30: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday inaugurated an Automated Multi Modal Biometric Identification System (AMBIS) that will create a criminal database by addition of iris and face biometrics. AMBIS will give a boost to the state governments plan to modernise the state police department and improve crime detection.
The CM, after the inauguration, told media persons that the uniqueness of the system is that with the help of mobile live scanners, a police patrol team can ascertain on the spot whether a suspect has any criminal antecedents or not. “Besides detecting crime through usual fingerprints at the crime scene, the system with the help of retinal scan, writers pad, palm and even bare sole scans can help trace criminals with 100 per cent accuracy and that too within a matter of 0.46 milliseconds,” the CM added.
As reported in TOI, the state cyber cell official told the publication that AMBIS will be further connected with Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS) across all police stations in the state. All the police stations, district headquarters and state headquarters will be linked through the system. The evidences gathered through this system can be produced before judiciary and will be valid too.
Balsing Rajput, state cyber cell superintendent of police, said the benefits of AMBIS is that it will add to precision and speed in solving criminal cases. “The application will help in increased detection and conviction rate in the state. It will be integrated with systems like CCTNS and CCTV that will enhance law enforcement capabilities. It will also help in identification of absconders, convicts, arrestees pertaining to unsolved cases. The portable kits will enable experts to solve cases at the crime scene,” he added.
The technology will be the best of its kind and Maharashtra will be the first state in the country to implement it, Rajput said. "A robust system for identification of criminals through database of fingerprints in addition to details of face and retina was required. Database of criminals booked in various offences like robbery, murder, rape along with CCTV footage was also required for an accurate identification,” he added.
