After skipping FinMin's dinner, journos boycott briefing

New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS): Relations between the Finance Ministry and journalists covering it has been uneasy after entry restrictions were imposed by the former but it came several notches down on Friday with correspondents boycotting a press briefing of senior officers.

This is considered a big embarrassment for the government as just weeks back, most of the journalists covering the Finance Ministry in the North Block stayed away from the post-budget dinner hosted by Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

On Friday, journalists walked away from the conference hall at the National Media Centre (NMC) after they were told that the officials addressing the media would only read out a statement and not take any questions.

The event turned even more dramatic when Finance Minister's Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Krishnamurthy Subramanian went out of the hall to apparently seek advice from top bosses on whether questions can be taken from the media but did not come back. Later, he could not be found anywhere near the conference hall.

In between, journalists kept insisting on asking questions and refused to accept the one-way traffic or monologue by the government while senior bureaucrats felt themselves to be in very awkward situation.

They were all expecting scotch and a well spread non-vegetarian meal as in the previous regime but served only chai & pakoda.

What do you say at the FinMin not giving opportunity to ask questions ? Tossing stale food at them and blurt out 'given free - eat if you want or leave' ?

Aren't journalists part of us citizens ? If they aren't ready to reply to journalists' questions, what does the govt expect ? Each of us to and queue up at the department with our queries ?

Earlier, it was scotch accompanied by print-this sheet. Now it is pure business and pure healthy vegetarian food.
Why are you grumbling but, Ma'am? No more masala news?

When last time PM Modi had a press conference, all the questions are answered by now Home Minister Amit Shah just like someone writing answer paper in board exams.

No questions are the policy of PM Modi. Now 'Finance Minister' also follows in the footstep of PMO.

I think 'Finance Minister' should also invite Bollywood star Akshaya Kumar of Canadian Passport holder and ask how to make 'pickle' of Demontisied currencies like 'Aam' interview with PM Modiji.

Let 'Finance Minister' host open question-answer session on neutral avenue invited by foreign and national unbiased media and take all serious questions related to the financial health of this nation.

The nation wanted to know how $5 Billion economies can be achieved without any job openings for the educated youth of India who is asked to take up the job of 'Pakoda' making.
