Trump renews J&K mediation offer; India says no thanks

Bangkok/Washington, Aug 2 (IANS): As US President Donald Trump, in an off-hand manner, renewed his offer of mediation in the Kashmir issue, India on Friday firmly rejected the offer, saying that any discussion on Kashmir, if warranted, will only be with Pakistan, and only bilaterally.

Hours after Trump told reporters in Washington that "it is up to Prime Minister Modi" to accept his offer to intervene in Kashmir, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Bangkok, conveyed "in clear terms that any discussion on Kashmir, if at all warranted, will only be with Pakistan and only bilaterally".

Jaishankar tweeted: "Wide ranging discussions with @SecPompeo on regional issues. Have conveyed to American counterpart @SecPompeo this morning in clear terms that any discussion onKashmir, if at all warranted, will only be with Pakistan and only bilaterally."

On Thursday, to a query by a reporter in the White House on the Kashmir issue, Trump, said: "Have they accepted the offer or not (to mediate)? Well, it is really up to Prime Minister Modi."

Trump added: "And I met with Prime Minister Khan. I think they are fantastic people, Khan and Modi. I mean, I would imagine they can get along really well. But if they wanted somebody to intervene, or to help them; And I spoke with Pakistan about that, and I spoke frankly to India about that; but that's been going, that battle, for a long time. If I can, if they wanted to, I would certainly help them."

Reacting to Trump's renewed offer, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi urged the US to use its "influence" to "persuade" India to start talks on the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Qureshi said that India was avoiding the talks and did not appear willing to negotiate on the matter.

"India insists it is a bilateral matter, but it is not even willing to come to the table for talks," he said.

"India won't agree easily to the Kashmir talks. We urge the US to exercise its influence and persuade India (to come to the table)," Qureshi said, adding that he will write a letter to the United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on the matter.

On July 22, President Trump had set off a diplomatic storm after he said, during a press conference at the White House with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, that he would "love" to mediate on the Kashmir issue and that it had been suggested to him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India strongly rejected Trump's claim. "No such request was made," Jaishankar said in Parliament.

The US administration had moved swiftly to counter the diplomatic embarrassment caused by Trump's claim, and acknowledged that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. The US administration clarified that it welcomes India and Pakistan sitting down to resolve the "bilateral" issue and the "US stands ready to assist".

Pompeo, during his meeting with Imran Khan in Washington on July 23, had not mentioned Kashmir at all.

Modiji, you are the right person to lead India. J&K is integral part of India. All ballots at my home have already been secured for you for the next term too. Do whatever is right . We fully support you.

We don't need interference on our land by any country, leaders etc. Hongkong became a part of China. I wish you success in your venture, Modiji.

Kashmiri Pandits were driven from their homeland by the terrorists. Governments which were able to help them did nothing for the security of these pandits. This Government has the needed strength in both the upper and lower houses to restore the homeland of these pandits.

We are highlt optimistic that you will do justice to the Pandits and allow rest of India to buy land there. Every Inch of land there is a part of India. May Lord give you long life, happiness and Good health.

    Jai Modiji. Jai Hind.

No wonder at all whatsoever . Its a part and parcel of their foreign policies.
Its a know fact to the world of dual face of the USAs foreign policies. The state presidents cannot cross the red line although they have political differences among the parties. They can stoop to any level to achieve their self goal.

Certainly I am not an expert on International disputes. However, reading between the lines, how come the President of a Powerful country suddenly takes interest in Kashmir? Have we given him the fodder to taste? Like, Trump made his intentions known, our PM should - for the same of clarity - come out in open and negate what Trump is saying. Many party colleagues may say a lot of things; but only when the PM makes a statement in this regard, the people of India would be reassured.

@ fake name alphonso, there is no such name in Christians.
    Alphonso is a mango name.
The opposition parties in the parliament have insisted several times with RSS man Modi to speak in the parliament about trump's claim of Kashmir.
But he never opened his mouth so far.
Why the defence Minister Rajanath is speaking in favour of him.
RSS man Modi has a mouth to speak.
He speaks like motor mouth 24X7 in the tvs.

This not the first time mediation offer was made by the USA president.
Former presidents Bill Clinton, Obama, George W. Bush were all have come for mediation on Kashmir.
Congress did not allowed anybody to mediate because of bilateral talks as the issue is in between India & Pakistan.
BUT THE CHAIWALA PRIME MINISTER SECRETLY ASKED TRUMP TO MEDIATE ON KASHMIR.

No third party mediation in Kashmir issue this was agreed between Indira Gandhi and Julfikar Ali Bhuto after surrender of 93000 Pakistani soldiers in 1971 War. Grow up trump.
We are capable of dealing with it on our own.
