Vijayapura: M B Patil challenges Pejawar Swamiji to appoint Dalit seer to Math

Vijayapura, Aug 3: "What locus standi does Pejawar Swamiji have, to pose us a challenge to participate in a debate with him about the creation of Lingayat religion? Is he our Prime Minister? If he sticks to the principle that Lingayats are Hindus, he should appoint Dalits or Lingayats as Swamiji of one of eight Maths at Udupi, and show his total commitment," said former minister, M B Patil, who has been spearheading a movement demanding separate religion status for Lingayats. His comment came in an angry retort to Pejawar Swamiji's repeated invitation for a friendly debate on the demand for separate religion status put forth by Lingayat leaders.

Patil said that Pejawar Swamiji is not a natural party to invite Lingayats for debate. "He is neither a Prime Minister, chief minister, nor our high command. He has been opposing our movement. If he is genuinely committed, we are ready to accept the challenge. But we cannot go to the spot which he suggests for discussions. He should come to the spot we suggest for debate. He can come to the spot which can be decided by Lingayat leaders like Sanehalli Swamiji, Dr S M Jamdar, Aravind Jatti etc," he said in a counter challenge.

He advised Pejawar Swamiji to address the problems faced in his own eight Maths instead of unnecessarily poking his nose in the affairs of other religions.

Reacting to this, Pejawar Swamiji wanted to know the reason for Patil's anger in response to his request to Lingayats not to part ways with Hinduism. He said that his intention is not to set right anomalies in Lingayat religion, but a friendly advice to remain with Hindu religion.

He agreed that there have been several lacunae in the eight Maths in Udupi and that efforts to set them right are on. He said his request to Lingayats is to stay with Hindus and not to correct any mistakes. He said his life is not as long so as to be able to set right everything.

On Patil's challenge to make Dalit the heads of Maths, he wanted to know whether Patil is prepared to do the same. He also said that he had not visited Yediyurappa's home on his own, and said he is ignorant why intellectuals have an axe to grind against him.

    there are already lot of things requiring attention in Udupi...shiroor mutt seer death, shiroor mutt affairs, allegations of caste discrimination in the Mutts, political stance/posture/campaign by Seers who are supposed to be spiritual leaders of devotees irrespective of devotee's political affiliation...

    In Kerala state-appointed Travancore Devaswom Board, which manages around 1,250 temples has for the first time allowed Dalit priests to take charge of temples, taking a giant stride in its sometimes stutter-filled path to social inclusion.

    When we go back to the history Udupi mutt from the days of 'Kanakdasa' was denied entry non-brahmins. The Kanakadasa symbolism is powerfully present in the Krishna temple. The gopura stands close to the site of the Kanakana kindi (Kanaka's window), a small window in the wall that surrounds the sanctum sanctorum. Legend has it that being a `Sudra', Kanakadasa had to stand outside the temple and pray to Krishna. It is believed that one day a breach miraculously appeared in the wall, and Krishna bent down to appear in his devotee's view. The breach was later made into a window and devotees to this day have to view the Krishna idol through the Kanakana kindi.

    The present Paryaya Swamiji of the Admar Mutt, in what can only be construed as an act of remarkable insensitivity and foolhardiness, had an old structure 'Kanaka Gopura' had strong associations with Kanakadasa, the 16th-century Bhakti poet-saint of disputed antiquity pulled down on August 13, 2004. The untouchable has never ended with the demolition of 'Kanaka Gopura', 'Made Snana' become more prevalent forcing the lower caste to roll over the plantain leaf eat by Brahmins.

    Basavanna was, perhaps, the first person in the world who wrote about the novel and revolutionary idea that work is worship. The sharana movement encouraged equality, brotherhood, and free-thinking. It was revolutionary: people of the working class got together to fight for equality, and against inhuman caste and gender discrimination. They created awareness about superstition by propagating reason. Most of all, the mass movement created by Basavanna and aimed at the root of exploitation by opposing the Sanatana traditions of the Brahmins.

    BJP/RSS controlled Karnataka Government should follow the example set by the Kerala state-appointed Travancore Devaswom Board and appoint Koraga community to manage Holy Shri Krishna mata. All the present Bramin controlled math management should retire and go to Varanasi for Pilgrimage. Krishna being not belong to high cast or Brahmin community will be pleased and like he loved the worship of Sudra Kanakadasa.

    A persons caste is his own mental status and the work he does .but to be qualified as a head of mutta certain process is followed.It is sans ones caste . From my experience the Brahmins are the best to head a mutta which has to be followed based on some religious principles.. It does not mean that the brahmin is superior and others are inferior. There are Bunts who are spiritual leaders who have established their own muttas. Similar Muttas can be established spiritually qualified people of any caste.
    This call by the politician is intended to create some social disharmony ..its not to uplift the Dalits or other castes..

    Will he make a call to make a Shia leader as the head of Sunny sect ? or vice versa ? Or muslims to eat pork?
    Will he make a call that a dalit convert should head the Vatican?

    even da born christian is not been made a vatican head. vatican head was chosen by da cardinals through an election. prior 2 elections there r prayers 2 heavenly King of kings to guide all cardinals. a priest or a pastor is called by da God. it is not chosen nor making a priest or a pastor by any of da christians nor da priests nor da bishops. sence_shetty should use common sense.

    Hindustan's present Honorable PM is more interested in taking care of ISLAM Woman's needs..., more than Hindu community's cause...,

    All said & done..., in my view...., Honorable Ex Minister's question to Shri Pejawar Swamiji is very relevant......, and the swamiji must take the challenge to prove that the cause to unite HINDU'S to protect HINDUISM..., is REAL....,

    Let us wait & watch.., what more development takes place in this regard....!!!!

    Million dollar point sir. Castiesm and Racism are two sides of one coin. We can't root it out unless bring reforms within ourselves.. You rightly pointed out Modi preferred to give justice to Muslim women over Hindus which is totally invalid and mockery of democracy that too when their own sisters daughters even wives despite spending hard time are deprived from getting justice.
    We have section of community few with politically motivated and few with hidden agenda behave like sarcastic and develop double standard attitude towards certain one community making hue and cry every other day over tiny issues and turning blind eyes over their major social and religious issues.
    We can notice few of them here participating regularly but now missing

    True.., the present day political class think that - talking ill against Non-Hindu woman and acting like they deliver justice., by showing blind eye to their own kith & kin, dear & near ones..., what an irony..., kyonki... aaj kal zamana FEKUISM ka....!!!!

    Religious leaders talking politics while political leaders interested/talking about religion.., that too much about non-majority religion with a political bias...,

    If we take one wisdom full look at the society..., it looks like the seer's & the religious heads seek political class more than divine connection..,.

    as far as my understanding, till now no Dalits have demanded to appoint dalit as seer to Math nor any one came forward as a seer to this math. from last 70 years these politicians used Dalits, Minority for their vote bank politics & kept them backward only. No development plan was introduced instead always shout about reservation slogan. Don't misuse the caste/religion for your politics. we are living with peace alongwith all religion/caste people. don't try to create gap between us, please....

    why these people using Dalits for their vote bank politics. why cant M B Patil appoint Dalit as his secretary? he is very much interested in dividing the people based on religion/caste but people knows his intention very well & rejected them in last election.

    Something similar was done by Janardhan Poojary like appointment of widowed women as temple poojary, not sure how successful it. I remember some one mentioning this let's abolish reservation then appoint dalit/ backward etc as Swamiji's to Udupi Matt, give up privilages then claim for being a matadipathi/ even priest for Udupi, Sringeri, subramanya mutts etc. With greater power comes greater responsibility.

    Let's not blame Pejawar Seer, its the Manusmriti , Holy Book divides Hindus into four varnas i.e. casteism. Person who practice religion from both heart and mind never ditch his faith.

    Have you read the original manusmriti? it divides people based on their work & doesn't tell any where to discriminate. If you are following it word to word if you are a brahmin you are supposed to be in temple not doing any other job,Pejawar swamiis supposed to do puja & devot his life to matta not enter in wordly life as he has taken sanysi diksha & wearing kavi dress,not to cross sea.You guys can't bent the manusmriti as you guys need

    Manusmriti does not apply to south Indians.
    According to Manu, it applies to people living between Himalaya and Vindhya mountains (north to south) and also between Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea (East to west)
    And according to Manu People living south of Vindhya mountains the south Indians are Barbarians. (Kadu manushyaru)

    This is what reservation has done to our country. Reservation came into being because the downtrodden can have equal opportunities. But now the water has risen above our head, reservation should be abolished. Even the rich enjoy reservation because of their caste or religion which is not serving the purpose for which reservation came into being. Reservation should be banned..its high time.

    .Reservation is medicine for the cancer called Cast & gender discrimination system. Reservation will end when a male or female Child of Brahmin & Koraga will become Swamiji of Udupi Krishna Math. When thousands of years discrimination on Dalits ends and equality prevails in India. Let us pray to Udupi Sri Krishna for the end of cast system & all kind of discrimination.
