Melbourne, Jun 13: A 24-year-old Indian student from Gujarat was attacked by a group of men here, the latest in a spate of racial assaults targeting the community members in Australia.

Hardik Bipinbhai Patel, who hails from Surat, was attacked by three people while he was about to enter his car here last night.

Patel, who is pursuing a course in commercial cookery at the Melbourne University, said two people came in front of him while he was about to enter his car and punched him on his face.

"Then someone from my back side hit on my head and I fell unconscious. When I woke up I was found far away from the area and an elderly man helped me to reach hospital," Patel, who suffered face injuries in the assault, said.

He said the attackers also looted his mobile, wallet and car keys and that they looked like drug addicts.

Patel, who was admitted to a hospital yesterday, was discharged today and is doing well.

The attack comes after Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney have held series of rallies over violent attacks and repeated calls for an inquiry into racial attacks against them.

Guys back home. I study close by to Melbourne for more than a year now. I need to ensure people back home that all this is a result of the media hype especially the one in India. Such attacks have happened not only to Indians but other nationalities too including Australians.

Haven''t there been attacks like this back home or even more worse than this?? Tourists been killed, raped.name it and it has happened. recently after the media showed the protest happening in Melbourne my mother called me up(she does everyday from the day i arrived here for the past 1 yr).the media showed a drastic image of some guys being dragged out of the protesting crowd. but did they tell why there were dragged like that?

Here is the answer. Some guys had shattered some glasses across the street during the protests and only they were singled out and taken out of the crowd. Why does the media act so immature and display only negative things and nothing positive? Why is it that the Indian media is always ready to tarnish the image of any person or country just for the sake of some news? I have read blogs across newspapers and some people have said that there isnt any racial discrimination in India or that in India we dont kill people saying they are from any state. Let me remind those people of the incidents that happened recently when people of North India were stoned or driven out of Maharashtra saying they did not belong there.

What have you got to say for that? Is that racial discrimination or something that you call a foreign culture influence?? Give whatever name you want to it. It is still a crime and it happened in India. Things like students getting harassed happens everywhere not just in Aus. You can wander around your backyard whenever you want. But when you step into an unknown territory its our responsibility to take care of ourselves. This is a peace living country where i have seen humanity. Where the driver of a bus gets down to help an old lady to get on it and does not move the bus until the lady has got a seat. What happens in India i need not tell. Do i?? Everyone here greets each other in the mornings including Indians no matter if they havent seen you before. I live with an Australian family and no they are not my relatives by any means. They treat me as a member of their family and I am proud of coming to Aus for my higher studies.

For those who claim India has better educational institutions I dont disagree with you. But answer one simple question of mine. Why arent you one among those studying in them? In a country where politicians have reserved seats for everything how can an efficient student get through? Please stop blaming people outside for something that not everyone is involved in. Aus is a beautiful place with lovely heart warming people. If this comment of mine hurts anyone I deeply regret it. But i needed to get this message through to parents who are worried about their children who are here and
