Zakir Nagar fire: Kejriwal announces compensation


New Delhi, Aug 6 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday inspected the spot of fire at Zakir Nagar where six people were killed and announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Kejriwal said the cause of the fire and the lapses, if any, would be investigated.

"Shocked to know about the loss of lives... The Delhi government will provide all help to affected families. Cause of fire will be probed," Kejriwal tweeted.

He also visited those admitted to the hospital and announced Rs 2 lakh each to the injured.

Six people died while 11 were injured in a massive blaze that broke out at a residential building in the national capital early on Tuesday.

According to the Delhi Fire Service, the blaze started at 2.21 a.m. in a four-storey building near the Jamia Millia Islamia University. Most of the injured were those who tried to jump off the building to safety.
