Mangaluru, Aug 8: In view of heavy rains received by the district since the last two days, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Sasikanth Senthil, extended holidays to schools and colleges in the district to Thursday.  

Comparatively, there was considerable lull in rainfall on Wednesday. In the evening however, several places received rain coupled with strong wind. The deputy commissioner has asked the officials to be available in their headquarters without fail as heavy rain is predicted on Thursday. He has said that for any problem relating to natural disasters, toll free number, 1077, can be contacted.

Because of rain on Wednesday, a tree which fell across Agumbe ghat road obstructed traffic for a few hours. About 100 houses in Udupi district were damaged. Many shops and houses Mutluppady near Ajekar were damaged due to strong wind which blew through the area on Wednesday evening. Over a hundred trees got uprooted across various roads, and 25 electric poles were damaged. A relief centre was made operational at Mutluppady government school. 

In the meanwhile, the work of clearing mud from the railway tracks at Siribagilu is in progress. Railway sources hoped to complete works by Wednesday night and to start day train from Thursday if more landslides are not experienced in this region. 

During the 24-hour period ended 8.30 am on Wednesday, Bhagamandala in Kodagu received rainfall of 29 cm, which was the highest in the state. Hosanagar in Shivamogga got 25 cm rainfall while Kollur recorded 22 cm. The city and surroundings got eight cm of rain. 

The meteorological department , in a prediction valid till Friday morning, said that heavy rains may be experienced all over the state.
