J&K Reorganisation Act gets President's approval

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS): President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday gave his approval to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which was passed by the Parliament in the recently concluded first session of the 17th Lok Sabha to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir with an Assembly and Ladakh without one.

 

Notwithstanding the controversy, the Bill was passed in the Parliament on Tuesday with the Lok Sabha giving its nod after a little over seven hours discussion. The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha a day before.

    why are u worried if the Article 370 is revoked? its good for the people of kashmir. Kashmir will develop, people will get education, children of the valley will have a bright future,Terrorism will be stopped.

    he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Indian government on August 5 abrogated the enforcement of Article 370 of the Constitution, which since 1950 has given near-autonomy to the state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). The state will be bifurcated into the Union Territories of Ladakh (without a legislature) and Jammu-Kashmir (with a legislature). The move is highly consequential in both symbolism and substance.

    The Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir that acceded to India in October 1947 was like a jigsaw puzzle. It had several sub-regions: Kashmir; Jammu, which shared greater affinity to Punjab; Ladakh, ethnically and religiously different; and the so-called “Northern Areas”, comprising Gilgit, Baltistan, Hunza and neighbouring states, with a still different ethnicity and a collective memory that was probably more Central Asian than South Asian.

    This menagerie of ethnicities was created by the descendants of Gulab Singh, a Dogra Rajput general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the greatest of the Sikh emperors. On Ranjit Singh’s death, the Gulab Singh family betrayed the maharaja’s successors by signing a deal with the East India Company; they acquired a kingdom in return. This kingdom was never a unitary entity.

    The Constitution doesn’t have only Article 370. It also has Article 371 A to I which provides special rights to people in Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, Andhra, Sikkim, and several other states.

    Today when you’re scrapping Article 370, what message are you sending to these states. By imposing President’s Rule in the Northeastern states and using the rights of their Assemblies in Parliament, you can scrap Article 371 too. What kind of constitutional precedent are you setting in the country?

    Can Presidential orders do away with Article 371A to 371G granting special rights to other states including Nagaland and Mizoram?

    Special status is required and to be given to such State which thinks Nation First... When religion comes above all other then what ever done in Kashmir is 100% correct....

    Sir, If I go by your logic Nagaland is 100% Catholic state with more than 873 churches. The Naga accord signed by PM Modi's government is drafted by RSS. This is the same Sangh Parivar talks about 'Akhand Bharat' but has no problem and Has agreed to Nagaland having a separate constitution, flag, currency and membership of the UN.

    The draft says, “All the top-ranking leaders of all Naga militant organisations will be honoured by giving them the equivalent ranks/spots as governors, ambassadors, officials in the Army and other security forces provided they have requisite academic qualifications, sound health and above all, a will to serve the nation as a dignified soldier/central government officers.”

    Any action without the participation of the state is null and void. The action is against the constitution of India.

    This is the best bill passed by Indian politicians. Kashmir, even pak occupied Kashmir is an integral part of India.

    Bill passed in RS with BJP majority regarding article 370 to abrogate the article which is stipulated in the constitution, is it legal ???. Is it legal to put leaders under house arrest if they stand by the constitution and fight for????. If it is internal matter then why broadcast to the world to explain unless you feel guilty????. So, is this a law abiding govt or lawless govt???...
