Mangalore, Jun 19:  The Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO) demanded strict action from the government against the donation menace in colleges by protesting in front of the deputy commissioner’s office (DC) on Friday June 19.

Speaking at the protest, Muhammad Nisar, district convener of SIO, said, “Due to the donation menace, a large number of students stay away from education. Some students miss the chance to pursue courses they have affinity for. So this menace should be abolished from the roots through strict rules by the government.”

Ruxana, district convener, girls wing of SIO. said, “The donation menace directly hits girls since parents who cannot pay the donation stop their education. Those who pay the donations suffer when job-hunting”.

The students held placards with slogans against donation and urged action which would benefit students from this year.

The have sent a memorandum to  chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and  higher education minister Aravinda Limbavali through the DC.

The memorandum includes a demand to establish more and more pre-university and degree colleges, extension of free education up to the age of 18 instead of the existing 14 and legal action against colleges which takes donation exceeding a specified limit.

Authorities should hunt the agents who are cheating the parents of students who seek higher education in instititution by demanding huge amount. They mediate to get admission in colleges especially for NRIs and they convince the parents that the college is asking donation and arranging seats on merit basis, and donation goes to his pocket. Everybody know one notorious agents, who had been cheating the parents of NRIs. The Institution also should black list such persons, safeguard their reputation.

It is easy to comment and support verbally the stand taken by the students with regard to the concept of donations. However quality education can be achieved only if we have the infrastructure needed and necessary to build and run good institutions. Where can the promotors of education go for the required funds to build colleges, hostels and labs to keep up with the times.

Students and parents... please try to understand the situations good institutions like St. Aloysius and St. Agnes are in. They provide the best possible education and at great cost. Let us generously come forward and support such institutions which provide excellent service to communities irrespective of caste and creed. Joe Gonsalves

The Government should duly recognise the commendable role played by the private educational institutions in the country. The authorities should and must assist and aid these institutions instead of allowing them a free hand in demanding donations.

Raj/Mangalore, I agree with you. The quota and reservation system must be abolished and students should be admitted to these institutions purely based on merit and performance and fee concession should be given to poor students. No caste system or minority factor is to be taken in to consideration in the educational institutions. The whole system requires re tuning an fine tuning.

Ranjith D’souza, It is their choice to dress like conservative it might be harmful if they oblige others to follow. We are in a democratic country and each and every citizen of India has the right to preach & follow the teachings of his/her religion.

We have world class quality education in Mangalore thanks to the professionally run private educational institutions. The fact is that without donations such educational institutions will not survive and will have to just shut down. I understand that there are enough merit seats in these private educational institutions for deserving students coming from the poorer sections of society. However, it is also a fact that even after 50 years of independence the performance of our successive governments in the field of Education and Health has been very poor.

George Cruz-USA Easy said and done. Merit system works only outside India.Children from poor families in India do not have recognition for their hard work and we all know this. Money really talks in India.Even after securing good marks, private colleges including catholic institutions demand donations. Do you have any clue on cash donations taken by the private education institutions? Maureen, Sydeny, Australia

Kudos to those demonstrating but why do they not come out clearly with the names of the institutions that are demanding donations and the quantum they are asking for for each stream- surely these demonstartors have first hand knowledge and are not generalising. Why donations which are illegal why not "interest free deposits from the parents/quardians" which can be returned within 6 months of the student finishing his/her studies or leaves the institution at the end of an academic year- after all when one passes out another gets in so it is in reality a fund that will never diminish every few years this deposit can be reviewed depending on the economic situation. I was in an institution decades ago where this worked very well and we students got better lighting in our classrooms, fans to keep the rooms cool and even an intercom system just with the fund- and believe it or not 85 pct of the passing out students got their parents to "gift" the deposit to the institution in appreciation of the good facilities provided ( ofc at that time the deposit was just 500/- per student). Think it over, managements and demonstrators.

Government Colleges doesnt have any donation system. But the private colleges to stop donation, merely a rule by Goverment will not help. Goverment has to pay money to the private owners.

Good protest. All organizations should join their hands in fighting this "donation" issue. On the other hand - I don''t understand why women are dressed up like that? Are we getting more and more conservatives ??
