Slowdown: 90-year-old biscuit maker 'Parle' to fire 10,000 employees

Mumbai, Aug 21 (IANS): Popular Indian biscuit maker Parle Products may cut up to 10,000 jobs owing to the prevailing macro-economic situation, according to a company executive.

Rural distress has taken a heavy toll on fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sales for the past few quarters. Companies like Hindustan Unilever, Nestle have reported weak growth owing to the slowdown in consumption.

According to reports, Mayank Shah, category head at Parle Products, has said that if there is no tax relief in the form of a GST rate cut, the company may have to lay off 8,000 to 10,000 people.

Apart from the auto sector, FMCG companies are also facing strong headwinds. Hindustan Uniliver, which saw a significant decline in its sales volumes during the June quarter, had said that "the near-term demand will remain subdued given the macroeconomic conditions."

The stressed rural sector, which comprises one-third of the company's market, is the key factor behind the company's tepid performance. The revival of the distressed agriculture sector would be a positive for the FMCG industry.

Announcing its latest quarterly results, ITC had said: "The FMCG-Others segment delivered a resilient performance during the quarter amidst a marked slowdown in the FMCG industry across urban and rural markets".

The maker of Maggie noodles and coffee, Nestle India, said: "We are proud of our strong performances in Maggi, Kitkat and Munch among others. However, environment continues to be challenging with headwinds in commodity prices and softer demand conditions".

It is so disheartening that this king of biscuit maker, 'PARLE' will fire 10.000 employees. That was my favorite biscuit and so was my wife's and children's who have now grown up now. In Patel Brothers grocery shop in New York, they had a counter for variety of biscuits and Parle biscuit had sale just for 1 Dollar for 10 packets. Now New Yorkers will miss this.

If you work actively to destroy social harmony and inject venom into society as the BJP has done, there is no chance of any jobs being available for there shall not be any economic growth in such an environment.

Unemployment is at its highest in 50 years. Ironically, instead of tackling urgently the tumbling economy, the large-scale closures, and the laying off of jobs, dealing with the livelihoods of crores of people, the intention of this govt is to carry forward RSS' fascistic agenda.

After Britannia, now Parle hit by the slowdown. Britannia Industries market shares have declined more than 3% since it announced its first-quarter results on August 9, 2019.

Over 3 cr people face job loss in the textile industry. The Cotton and blends spinning industry is witnessing the biggest crisis in the past 10 years. The Indian textile industry which provides employment to about 10 crore people directly and indirectly and accounts for 2% of GDP, is staring at huge job loss, not seen in last 10 years, claimed an apex body representing the industry.

Minister, Smriti Irani, who is very active on Twitter has said nothing on the crisis so far.

PM Modi is in world tour after the exhaustive election campaign. Home Minister Amit Shah busy active with NRC. RSS is busy implementing their agenda.

The BJP fuelling Kashmiri separatism for electoral gains. But the BJP is in the business of winning elections; it cares only that voters will reward it generously for doing what’s popular today. And so continues the conflict in Kashmir.

Very sad to hear the news. Parle-G biscuits has been morning breakfast of many poor labourers in urban areas of India. I think GST on food items must be bare minimum.

    People,

Government should reduce the GST in some sectors to pop up sectors like Automobile and FMCG...

US reduced bank lending rates gradually to near zero....during 2007 economic recession...and was successful in coming out of recession....

Central Government can balance this by reducing unnecessary Defense spending....Against whom we are spending???....Pakistan we can win hands down...China we cannot win a war with them...their defense budget in three times than ours....

    ...Tak...Takk...
