Bangalore, Jun 29: Honnali MLA Renukacharya, who has been in the thick of controversies ever since he was elected, was arrested by KTJ town police at Davangere in connection with the inflammatory speech case filed against him on Monday June 29.
Renukacharya had been accused of delivering a provocative speech during the election campaigning a few months ago. A case had been booked under Section 125 of the Representation of People Act. He is said to have opined that 'heads of the anti-Hindus should been chopped off'. Renukacharya’s remark came in reaction to an earlier alleged anti-Hindu statement by former minister Kagodu Thimmappa of the Congress. Later, Thimmappa denied making any anti-Hindu statement.
This exchange of hate words had started dominating the election campaign after a controversial statement issued against the minorities by BJP youth leader Varun Gandhi.
Following the complaint against him, Renukacharya had applied for anticipatory bail, which in turn was rejected by the court. Accordingly he was arrested by the police on Monday. Sources said that he will be produced in the district court later in the day.
