Udupi: Walkathon held to create awareness on eye donation

Manipal, Aug 28: KMC Hospital, Manipal, District Health Society-Blindness Control Division, Udupi district and Sight Life International jointly organised a ‘Walkathon on eve of Eye Donation Fortnight’ on Wednesday August 28. 

The walkathon was jointly flagged off by Dr Poornima Baliga B, pro-vice chancellor MAHE, Manipal, Manjunath, circle inspector, Udupi, Geetha Maiya, director student affairs MAHE. 

The walkathon started from Kalsanka and ended at Board High School. The main theme of the programme is ‘Light up a Life, Donate your eyes’. An eye donation awareness street play was also staged by students of Manipal College PF Nursing. About 250 doctors, nurses, students and staff members participated in the event.  

 

The National Eye Donation Fortnight is celebrated every year from August 25 to September 8 under the National Programme for Control of Blindness. The campaign to create awareness was held successfully as the message went out to the people to donate eyes or pledge the eyes for those with corneal blindness. 

According to a report, one of every five blind people of the world is from India. That means at least 46 lacs of Indians are suffering from the corneal blindness whereas, the rate of eye donation is only 35,000 which is too little in numbers. So it has become very necessary to educate the people of the society including young and old to finish the gap between demand and supply of the cornea. 

C G Muthana, COO, Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Dr Padmaraj Hegde, deputy medical superintendent Dr Sulatha Bhandary, professor, and head -department of ophthalmology Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, Dr Surendra Chimbalkar, district leprosy officer and other dignitaries were present.

    It is a commendable event conducted to get more awareness about cornea donation.
    Many people are willing to donate their corneas after death and pledge for the same. It is only half the job done. A person also has to communicate to his family and relatives that on their death it is his/her wish to donate the eyes. Only then will the number of eye donations increase.

    God helps those who want to do service here is a real example
    About 15 years back there was acute shortage of Eye(Cornea)in Mumbai
    Rotory club Mumbai north President Shri V C Mehta approached me .We coulld notice the problem is not pledging the eye its timely enucleation of the eye within 6 hours.So we thought best place would Muncipal hospital where Eye Surgeon and Accidental death cases are together and what is required is convincing the Relatives of the Dead to eye donation.Even if the dead had pledged eye donation if relatives dont agree it will not work.So by Gods grace we got one retired Matron Madm Gra e Pinto ( Mangalorean ) who agreed to do the job of convincing relatives
    We requested R N Cooper Hospital Medical Superintedent .He agreed so also Eye Surgeon .We were given a small table space at hospitals casualty department .
    Madam Grace Pinto nicely convinced Relatives of the dead and got the eyes enucleated from dead patients .In the first month we could achieve 30 eyes enucleated .Then its 100 and its still going on .Now I heard everymonth about 500 Eyes are enucleated every month
    Best part is niether myself or Rotory club getting any money and we are not interferimg in Eye Banks decision as to whom to give the donated eyes its in Queue
    But satisfaction is 100% for us

    I would assume all the participants of this drive have already signed off for the donation. If so it would be a great motivation for others otherwise it will just remain as the show and may not yield any results

    Eye organ donation or even a body donation is a worth while cause .If we do this we will find inner peace because we were born with nothing and take nothing.

    Everyone pledge will donate eye and body organ when they die. This spirit comes when they are in good health. As time passes when become old..they forget there oath and promises as suffering themselves at last stage some where no one's notice. It's actually duty of family people and near dear ones to fulfill dream of person successfully. Otherwise NGO's should given all the information and linked to system..so they can carry out things on time anywhere person breathed last. Lack of system curtail a good cause much. Much of time family members itself ignore the most and not bother to involve in formalities at the time of agony and grief.
