Punjab not to implement amended Motor Vehicles Act yet

Chandigarh, Sep 2 (IANS): Congress-ruled Punjab on Monday refused to implement stricter amended Central Motor Vehicles Act at the moment, citing the whopping penalty for traffic violations which would put additional burden on the common man.

"We will take a call after studying the penalty amount that is abnormally high," state Transport Minister Razia Sultana told reporters in Jalandhar city.

The amended Act has penalties up to 10 times more than the previous amounts. It came into effect on September 1.

"We will implement the Act after reviewing the penalties with the Chief Minister," she added.

It is a bold step by Punjab Govt. Penalties which are existing from century cannot be increased arbitrarily by ten folds. It only shows the inability of concerned authorities in implementing law and order inability to provide adequate road conditions and systems. Just by increasing penalties, they think that all problems of traffic congestion, parking problems, road conditions, will be solved. Why are the authorities not restricting the number of two wheelers coming into the roads? Why can't the authorities restrict and carts and cyclists from entering highways for which common man is made to pay toll charges? Why are we paying toll charges if the road is not worthy of driving?

First provide the basic facilities and then talk about fines.
